Hi Everyone

I was wondering how you all insure your 70 series, given that these vehicles were not sold in the USA originally and therefore may be an anomaly for insurance claims departments if a loss were to occur. Does anyone have any stories to share or strategies that they have taken to protect themselves and their investments?

I'm sure that thread is excellent. I didn't pay cash for my truck so I insured it through the finance company. They used Safeco. Not cheap but not horrible. They looked the other way on no garage and my admission that u would use it off-road but you have to tread really lightly there. I figured I should be honest up front. They said no more than 10,000 miles a year and I think I'll stay under that since I have another truck.

Our regular insurance is with farm bureau and while they would insure it for liability they wouldn't insure replacement value because it's RHD. That's another potential issue. I came away from the experience thinking that you just have to take your unique situation to various companies and do the best you can.

I insured mine through Farm Bureau but they actually used a third party insurer to get the replacement value at $25K due to the VIN. They never did ask if mine is LHD or RHD.

I do have some limitations but I don't recall all of them right now.

I have Safeco and had no problems listing it as a land cruiser with an agreed upon replacement value??

Me either. They were extremely cool to work with.

Yep, I'm digging up this older thread. I've been looking for options for when my JDM BJ70 gets in country and this popped up in one of my many searches here.

A friend of mine is an insurance broker. She has all my current policies written with SAFECO.

When I presented her with the specs of what I want to buy, she got me quotes from Hagerty and American Modern.

She told me:

"Both of these company guarantee to pay you the agreed value, in the event of a total loss.

***And they both will pay for stock original replacement parts and have specialists that will help you or the repair shop find those pieces.***

This is why I prefer to insure with these classic car companies, rather than Safeco."

There ya go...

Do the classic car insurers require limited mileage and garage storage?

Specialty vehicles need a specialty insurance provider. That’s why I’m quoting a policy from American Modern’s Collector Vehicle Insurance program. American Modern has been in the specialty insurance market since 1965 and offers valuable coverages like:

Agreed Value – when insured for agreed value, your coverage level is a value we both agree upon for your vehicle. Plus, the included Inflation Guard will provide additional protection.

Tailored Mileage Plans – choose the mileage plan that works best for you – 1,000, 3,000, 6,000 or unlimited and unused mileage rolls over from year to year.

Nationwide Roadside Assistance – While the base policy includes $75 of towing reimbursement coverage, the Nationwide Roadside Assistance Program is also available which provides 24 hour toll free access to flat-bed towing and roadside assistance as well as increasing covered amount to $200.

Automatic Coverage for New Purchases – if you find that perfect vehicle, or the deal of a lifetime, don’t hesitate to buy it. For 30 days you have the same Liability limits and up to $50,000 Physical damage coverage on any new purchase.

Added Value – Included with each policy is $2,000 for spare parts, $600 for trip interruption, and $750 for pet coverage.

Expertise Claims – American Modern’s dedicated Collector Vehicle claims staff handles only Collector Vehicle Claims and have a full understanding of the nuances involved with bringing your car back to its pre-loss condition.

I hope these highlights help show that American Modern’s policy is designed with your needs in mind. I have enclosed a checklist that outlines the items needed to activate your new policy. Please feel free to email, fax or mail these items to my office.

If you have any questions or need a revision to this quote, please feel free to call our office. Thank you for the opportunity to quote on your valuable collector auto coverage.

Sincerely,

Hagerty is much easier to convince to insure your cruiser for full value but the limitations they impose suck for a 70 series cruiser.

Non-classic auto insurers...not so easy to convince on grey market vehicles. It took me a visit in person to my insurance rep to make it happen through what she called a "management override".
