Ok so I have a BJ 74 which did not come fitted with factory flares. After looking at a few options for flares I decided that the Factory ones where the way to go due to look and fitment.
Luckily for me I managed to source a set and they came with most of the brackets and clips which as it worked out was a good thing.
The factory flares unlike most aftermarket ones do not just screw through the lip of the guard from the underside, they use an array of brackets which need to be fitted to the guards and then the flare bolts onto them.
The alignment of thse brackets is important and it is what dictates the alignment of the flares. There is some adjustment in the brackets an you can move them around slightly with their slotted holes.
Step 1
I lifted the BJ and took the front wheel off, I then cleaned the guard so the tape would hold.

I then put the guard in place to ensure there was no differences ith guards or alignments. There wasn't.

Step 2
Now I was happy the flare would fit I sorted out the brackets and fitted them onto the flare so I could mark out the guard.

The brackets bolt to the small pedestals inside the flares.

By mounting the guards in this way Toyota got a lot more strength and kept the nice clean lines.
The mounts from underneath.

Step 3
Starting with the centre point mark and then fit the brackets. The reason for starting at the centre is that this makes aligning the corners easier, supports the flare square and it is an inverted bracket making it very easy to mark and mount. The rest are not inverted and need some fiddling with a bent scribe to get too.

Once drilled you can mount the first bracket,

Continue this for the rest of the brackets and then simply bolt the flare to the guard.
Done !!! Way cool ..
I will get some more pic's and add more details when I do the other three. I will also be sealing the inner guards with black under car deadener so will get the small white lips sorted then as well.
If you would like to see more details then let me know ASAP as while she is in bits it is pretty easy to take specific pictures.
