Just to clarify, the two lowest plugs on the gear box are the ones you need. The slightly higher one, which is on the passenger (left) side for us here in oz is the filler plug.

Ah ha. Just been trying to figure this out myself with the H150F in my 80 and noticed the really high plug on the RHS first, then found a not so high one on the left hand side which I think might be an indicator of a problem. It's complete surrounded in sealant of some sort (looks like silicone) and I am not going to attempt to remove much of it right now in case the gearbox casing where that plug goes is damaged and all that sealant is there to close up the break.

Will have a better look in a mo as I'm going to work in about 30 mins and need to put the plastic plate back under the gearbox.

The lowest plug on the RHS (drain plug) is fine and it's not gooped up. The really high one on the RHS - is that just another drain/fill/access plug or getting into a different part of the tranmission? I might have to use that if the proper fill plug area is actually damaged until I can get the trans pulled out.

If the top plug on the RHS is usable as a filler (albeit with difficult access) I can then take it out, take out the drain plug and see what comes out, and get some new fluid in the trans (tomorrow - no time available now).

PS. I found the rubber boot around the clutch fork has been totally ballsed up in the past. THe rubber has bends in the wrong places now and I can't get it to sit around the lip of the bell housing opening properly. argh....

Ok now I've determined that I definitely will NOT try to take out the proper filler plug because of how much silicone is around it. I don't want to risk not being able to put the plug back in or having a leak there.

I've got the RHS top plug out and have worked out a way to rig up a tube to the top of the engine so that I can gravity-feed gear oil from a bottle down into the upper RHS filler plug opening.

What I still don't know is if those particular upper filler plugs (there's one on each side at the top of the gearbox casing) do actually lead into the main part of the gearbox itself - logic says they will. I'm now going out to pull the drain plug and see what I get out. With luck, it's reasonable looking gear oil, and I'll have a go at renewing it from the top opening via my rigged up hose.

Craig.
