I'm want to attach a remote starter switch to my 83 FJ60. Other older cars I've owned had a relay thingy on the firewall, but on my LC the battery cable attaches directly to the starter motor. So where do I connect the hot lead from the remote switch?

The thingy on the firewall is called the solenoid. On the toyota starters, the solenoid is attached to the starter motor. The FSM shows a wire that runs from the ignition switch to "terminal 50" on the starter. IIRC, this wire terminates at the starter using a spade connection. Remove that wire and connect one lead from the remote starter to the spade connector on the starter (terminal 50). connect the other lead from the remote starter to terminal 30, which is where the heavy lead from the battery is connected. When you push the button on your starter, power from terminal 30 will go to terminal 50 and the starter will turn on...

Our trucks have immobilizers? I don't think mine does...

I don't think I could get a remote start to work on my rig. I'd have to remember to leave it out of gear, leave the choke on... even then, sometimes I have to finesse the gas a bit to get it to start when cold.

PabloCruise is correct. I want to hook up a remote switch under the hood so I can bump the engine to TDC.

2mbb: I thought about your response, and I'm not sure hooking up the hot cable from the battery to an ignition wire is correct. Shouldn't the remote switch short across two big cables (the high amp hot side) on the solenoid?

NO!

A remote starter switch does not have the capacity to carry the 400 amps across the big terminals. Just go from hot, either the battery or the upper big terminal, to the male spade that the small wire attaches to. Pull the small wire off and you'll see it in there.
