I just added a rear hatch light to my 2004 LC; thought I'd share some details since this old thread has been resurrected. Bought a National Luna touch light LED from Equipt Outfitters, tapped into the dedicated line I ran from my aux fuse block to the left rear quarter panel for my fridge to provide constant 12V+; ran this wire up through the flexible rubber thingmo with the rest of the hatch wiring. Tapped the hatch ground switch as per the tlcfaq post about this. Works incredibly well and set me back about $50. In these pics, the light is secured with tape--I've since screwed it to the trim.
I'm going to do 3 LED bullet lights with a dimmer switch using the courtesy switch wire. I think it will look something like this..
This forum is making me antsy for more lights. I went with the easy way out and carry around two of these bad boys

This looks like a good setup. I like the recessed design of the light and the idea of a dimmer adjustment. Keep us posted.

Some more pics of my install, now that it’s not secured with 100 mph tape….
I thought about flush mount, but that seemed like a whole different level of PITA/trim modification, and this is absolutely out of the way of cargo and still well positioned to provide great illumination of the tailgate and cargo area. And because of the switched ground, it cannot be turned on even if some cargo shifts.
This lights things up so well that I switched it to low—even medium (on white light setting) was painfully bright at night.
For those going flush mount (which would of course be even cleaner looking) I’d definitely recommend orienting them “up” as that’s the direction that’s best for illuminating the cargo area when the hatch is up.

Finally got mine installed today. I put the dimmer knob in the handle so its out of the way. I used the hatch switch wire like TLCfaq did for my ground. Ran one wire for power through the hatch and out the tool access door under the wing of my drawers and into the fuse panel. With the lights on max the Renogy battery app says its using 0.16 amps. I pointed 2 of the LEDs down and one forward into the cabin. I only broke 2 tabs off the hatch trim but it seems to still stay put 
Best part is that no matter if the lights are on or not when you close the hatch they turn off thanks to that TLCfaq trick.
