Hello, I recently bought a used 2010 lx570, noticed some rust on the frame on the body. Took it to a shop and they recommended me to do full undercarriage detail, apply both rubber undercoat and fluid film. After the work was done I learned that undercoating over existing rust is bad...

What should I do now? Do I go back and strip the undercoat ASAP, or should I leave it for a bit until rubber starts to crack... or something else? I'm in a bit of a panic that I would ruin the frame for a vehicle I've been wanting to buy for a long period of time. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and hope you have a good weekend

I'll give you my 2 cents from Calgary. If you have the time and space, take the time to do an Eastwood or POR15 undercoat. Inspired by this thread,

I plan to do this later this fall or in the spring next year. My rust is not bad, but I think it's worth spending the time in coveralls and a respirator to wire wheel/strip the old runs, treat the rust, and then "encapsulate" or cover it for a fairly permanent fix.

In your case, this will require stripping whatever undercoat has been applied.

Is your body rusted or just your frame?

Any pics of what they did? If they simply sprayed a rubberized coat over the rust, then IMHO it needs to come off. There will be places water and salt can get in and cause further rust under the coating. However, I have no idea how to remove it. What was the type/brand they used.

POR over rust will destroy your frame long term. It does not bond well to the rust, traps moisture, and will cause the frame to rot. Horrible product.

I have had very good experiences, with proper application of POR15 over the last 15 years. My only complaint about the product is that I find the application teadius compared to other paint and epoxy products. I find it goes on best by brush, rather than spray.
