Hi,

I just wanted to get an idea how long tires can be used before they need to be replaced.

There is a date code on your tires near the rim of your tires. It is the last 3 or 4 digits in an oval that begins with DOT. 3 digits means it was constructed in the 90's and 4 digits means it was constructed after 2000. Please post the date code, brand and model of tire, how many miles you have driven on them, and when you are planning to replace them.

Thanks,
BW

I was not aware of any time limit on tyres, surly this is down to condition which can be check visually.
I think that if vehicle is laid up then it is advisable to jack it up to prevent flat spots developing and not to allow solvents to come in contact with them. It may be possible that UV rays damage them over time I am not sure I would have thought that these days additives were in the mix to prevent that though..

Generally, you should replace your tires at 3/32" tread depth. But this will vary from person to person.

I'm pretty sure there is a time limit to tires regardless of how good they look. They get brittle with time and are not to be trusted. I was told by a dealer that 5 years is the safe limit. I did have the experience of a sidewall just opening up on a friends tire but we were luckily driving in crawling traffic and his tires were very old though tread was still thick. The vehicle, an old pajero, had been in storage too long. He changed the entire set.

This post says 6 years,

But it's just one opinion.

When I first bought my 80 last year the tires had a build date of '96 on them, and the odometer had 95k miles on it. Needless to say those tires scared me quite a bit, which is why I now have the 295's. I don't remember the date on the new tires but I think they were made in '04.
