have added 90w to my arb locker front differential. I am at one gallon, and still no spill back out of the port.

anyone have an idea what the capacity of the 1969 fj40 front differential is supposed to be?

Should be full at 2.6 quarts - mine was full at 2.5L - I suppose the locker could vary it a tiny bit but 4 quarts is incredible, how much did you take out?

took out ...

about 3 1/2 qrts.

From visual inspection... the 2-3 qrt amount will never fill that much cavity. even with the srb locker in there instead of the regular carrier.

one question... i have the front on blocks. it is pretty level. not perfect. i know that will make some diference.

WHERe would you put a level on the vehicle to verify that is not part of my issue?

i am going to measure the old fluid.

I used a couple 1 gallon containers for gearbox, transfer box and rear axle. Got a bit left, might not be enough for the front axle but not far off.

I suppose you are using the fill plug on the side and not filling through the breather hole (that does seem unlikely)

Haynes gives 2.5L which is 2.64 quarts.

ok boys and girls ...

the fill hole i am using is in the front of the diff housing. got that. i measured the old 90w oil, and it comes to just a smidge under 1 gallon and 1 pint.

so, my angled down a tiny bit look of the vehcile on blocks matches that amount of fluid. like 1 1/2 inch over the frame length (wheel hub center).

skyward facing fill hole. that is really funny.:):):) and thanks for the double check. i do do do dumb things at times. i can see myself ... oh craypolla, no brakes.... oh my look at the liquid coming out of the wheels. its all under the fendors ... my oh my it stinks now. no really, this is not without a proper foundation of previously experienced moments. love you guys.

LOL! I was going to ask if you remove the axles seals.

I am doing the front soon, perhaps tomorrow. I will measure what comes out and goes in. Gallon and a pint is 5.1 litres. Also going to recheck my rear is full.

The fill plug should not be pointed at the sky....
I was thinking about that. Cruiserdrew taught me a good trick a couple of weeks ago. If you have a SOA the fill hole is angled down to far to fill the diff to the correct capacity, he suggested using the breather hole to complete filling.
