How Many Miles are Too Much?

The ticking is generally a warped exhaust manifold. This is due to thin metal on exhaust manifold, needed to comply with U.S. emission control, this was to heat the catalytic converter more quickly. Toyota corrected this around 2003.
Toyota replaces free of charge, they did mine at around 20k on right befor i owned (records at toyota dealer) and the left at 60K miles after I purchased. :o

Come again; will Toyota replace the manifolds on my 2000 LX for free?

One thing to note, while cost of repairs will be low, the same cannot be said for the cost of maintenance. If you do not perform your own maintenance you can expect to spend thousands on wear items between 100-200k. This is true of course for all vehicles, but maintenance is a little pricier on a 60k LC.

I guess it boils down to the fact that you don't get to drive a 60k truck for 15k and not expect to spend a little money to keep it running happily. Will this figure be less than you would spend on a Cherokee from 100-200k? YES!!

They did mine for free in 2004, which I had just purchased with just under 60k and replaced the manifold before going over 60K.

I don't know if it was because under 60k or if they impose a time limit. But it is certainly worth speaking to one or two dealers about. Slee said to me; it has nothing to do with comply with U.S. emission control, the dealer that did it for free said it did. Regardless it was a defect and one could make and argument concerning safety.

This is very true. General rule of thumb that has served me well throughout the years is planning on roughly 20% of the used vehicle purchase price for repairs and/or maintenance. Obviously the amount varies based on the vehicle, age and condition. The mods start after the 20% :frown:

98-99 only had a 2 pinion front so if you plan to off road be aware it’s a little weaker (I would own one of these)
00-01 had some (~10%) tranny issues and the exhaust tick (I skip these)
02+ no issues to speak of (I own this guy)
03+ has the 5 speed trans, marginal if any difference unless you tow.(too expensive for me with minimal noticeable upgrades)
I get 16mpg average with my 02 LX470 and think the hydraulically controlled suspension(AHC) give you an amazing ride, and you can adjust firmness with the dial, to more comfort to more firm.

I wouldn't be scared of any mileage if maintenance was regular especially if dealer records are avaliable like on the LX470. Lexus.com plug in the VIN and all maintenance records can be seen.
Example I got this from Lexus.com before I bought my truck.
(I cut out all the other trips for tire rotations and oil changes etc.)

I base lined my LX plus upgraded suspension and other goodies. Should be good now except for oil/filter changes and rotations for 5 years at 12k per year.

The 03-05 has non-VVTi but has the A750 5-spd auto. The 2006-07 got the VVTi upgrade that added about 25hp.

TIL... thanks man

I guess I'll jump into the fray. I drive as part of my living and have averaged nearly 40,000 miles per year. Owned and driven 14 different vehicles including fords, gm's, Nissan's, Hondas and Toyota's. The proof lies in the fact that my Toyota's have always way outlived the other vehicles by far. And of the other vehicles that made it into the 200,000 mile range, they became an unpleasant ownership experience because failed window motors, failed climate control, leaky power steering pumps, leaky cooling systems, bad tie rods, bad MAP sensors, electrical issues, transmission failures, alignment problems all plagued me with the fords and gm cars once they were approaching 200k. But my Toyota's crossed that Barrier without any issues. They start up every morning for me and just run and drive. Current vehicles are a 98 cruiser with 130k and a 98 Camry with 271k. Both drive deceivingly well... And they will sail into 300k without any hoopla. People, spend some time reading consumer reports. All those black circles aren't lying...

...Toyotas are reliable but they also quickly become beaters because of the lack of maintenance. Stay away from beaters.
while pm is always preferable, I don't believe that Toyota's "quickly become beaters" because of lack of maintenance. Especially the 100's, as compared to older ones.

I agree. After having traveled the world I have seen a lot of Toyotas that appear to have had little maintenance in a very long time, and they just keep on going.

They don't quickly become beaters, but they can quickly become money pits to new owners that are trying to catch up on overdue maintenance and repairs that haven't been properly addressed if you're not careful though.

Beaters, no. Money sucking leech? possibly. :)
