So here's the deal. I need to a few days after taking my truck out for a long trip the truck started to act squirrely starting. It would hesitate a little before the engine turned over. It went to the local parts store and they tested the battery and battery checked out okay, but the meter indicated that the alternator was bad. The starter now won't turn the engine over at all at this point. The only way I can get it started is jump starting it.

I want to take it to a real mechanic that knows electrical systems. The problem is he is 3 hours away. Will the truck make it there if the battery is dying or dead on the way? What can I do?

Thanks for letting me know what options there are.

Shane

personally if you know its the alternator.

1 charge the battery up fully
2. You can drive it - no lights - no indicatos (minimal usage), no heater no air cond (not sure where you from), no stereo all to save the battery
3. take a spare fully charged battery also
then you should be ok
I think 3L is mechanical manual pump off the engine. if electric pump then not far.

if your battery is dead and not charged I have no idea how far you can get. i have driven for hours on the mighty yellow with a flat battery (two)

Theoretically it will run forever with a dead battery. But you probably need at least 6v to work the fuel cut solenoid if it has one.
As Cicak said, charge the battery up and take another spare in case you have to stop the engine or stall it along the way.

My drive belts all broke one time, causing the vacuum shut off to be disabled. Needless to say, I had the ignition off, keys out and BOTH batteries disconnected and it was still running.

IF the 3L is anything like the 13B-T (mechanical) it will run with no battery power until you turn it off - be it 5km or 500 km.

your dash instruments and indicators still ned to work etc so a FULL battery is requried . Once battery gets below 11v or so its going to DIE and not charge back up.

The 3L will run forever as will a 13B-T no issue.

asI said Charge it on a battery charger then take it to the workshop along with a spare for the run..
