How does one get old gas out of the fuel tank?

Hey folks,

My 80 series has a drain plug.

I'm reading on-line that I am to pull the high pressure fuel line and then get the fuel pump to run. I think I could find the high pressure line but how do I get the fuel pump to run without starting the truck?

For background, I've come by a 2006 GX470 that's been sitting for over two years. It has a little over a quarter of a tank of fuel in it now. I'm certainly tempted to fill the rest of the way with fresh and hope for the best but if there were to be a fuel problem, well then I'd have to drain a heck of a lot more fuel to fix it so... I'm undecided at this point.

If the cap was on the tank tightly, I would add gas and go. Modern fuel systems are pretty tight. You could always pull the rear seat (or whatever's needed), the pull the fuel pump, and smell/study the gas in the tank. Would give you peace of mind about much of the fuel system.

Thanks. See, Im on that same page except, in this vehicle, you cant actually pull the pump through the rear seat. It looks to me like you have to actually drop the tank to get the pump out. Otherwise, I would pull the pump and siphon out more gas.

I havent done this method before where one uses the fuel pump to drain the tank.

This worked. I had a bit more than a quarter tank sitting in the truck for about 2 years. I mixed in 10 gallons of new gas. I rocked it back and forth a good bit to make an attempt at mixing the old and new.

I just ran it for about 30 mins and drove it around the block. No issues
