Just a question I wanted to ask into the round since quite a while and never came around to do it.
Differences in turbo whistle - the turbo on my 12ht has different noise levels depending on what I think could be ambient temperature, air density or air moisture levels or most likely a combination of all.
Every thing is fine with the technical side of it - over the years it is repeating itself ..... the whistle is just sometimes more prominent than on other "quiter" days. Lately I though it might be a winter/summer thing. What are your experiences ?

Yeah thought that too, during the nice summer days we have currently here I hardly hear any whistle...

PPPPPPpppppsssstt whoosh PPPPPpspsssssssst whoosh

^^this

But sometimes I hear it sometimes I don't

My 2LT (that straight piped itself a few years ago with some help from road salt) makes a lot of turbo noise when it's cold, the turbo is as loud as the rest of the engine. Once it gets up to temperature you can only hear it at certain revs though.

diesels need turbos imho

My 2B is the same way (td04l13t turbo). Its really noticeable at low speeds.

Thank you all for the input so far, much appreciated. My old original ct26 produced a really nice turbo whistle - especially at low speeds through towns. When I repaced it with a way more effective variation of a ct20b that whistle nearly disappeared - and that is with a straight through 3" system. The only small absorptive muffler has long lost it's perforation collecting soot.

Definite “whistle” sound at idle. Sometimes I can hear a spool down if I am on the pedal and then suddenly let off.
If the spool down is an even noise, that's the same sound. If it's an uneven fluttering noise, it's kind of like that but even.

Edit: just noticed you wrote definite, not define. My comment makes no sense in the correct context.

I can hear my turbo at idle from outside the vehicle, even immediately on cold start. Moving at low speeds no turbo sound inside the cab, the slightest bit of throttle and I can hear it spool up.

Think it's just the factory exhaust, but it sounds really good to my ear. Exactly the right blend of enough engine/turbo sound to be enjoyed, without being the slightest bit obnoxious. Gets second looks from people and approving nods and thumbs up.

if my passanger window is closed i dont hear too much, but i crack it so i can hear the turbo through the snorkel, makes me happy
any throttle and it whistles, the tdo4 is very responsive, never hear it off-throttle at all really, no flutter, i think my wastegate is pretty much shut all the time with how much i have it shimmed and sprung and bled off with the boost controller, i have a recirc bov plumbed in, as it has the throttle plate, so on extreme throttle releases i just barely hear it whoosh every now and then.
