I have a 90 FJ62.

When it is hot and i stop for some reason, i will put the key in, turn and hear the solenoid click, all the lights will work, but no starter. Battery checks good and is 6 month old. I will try a couple of times and sometimes it starts, sometimes I have to walk away and come back after a couple of minutes and it will either start, or nothing, just solenoid clicking.

Could it be the starter? When it does work, it cranks perfectly. It does not always happen......

Neutral Safety Switch?

Fusible links?

Would love some ideas....

Mike

I would guess it's a starter solenoid taking a dump.
If you have not yet changed the starter, might be a good idea.
I've never seen a US 62 that could take a push start to get home from the Wawa.;)

check your starter contacts and plunger, i bet they are worn. mine did the same. new contacts are 16 each side and the plunger is 28 from the dealer. my rebuild pics should be up sat if you want to see how to do it. there is also another post with pics here in the past week or so. easy fix takes about an hour to replace,

Your problem could also be as simple as loose battery clamps. Check that the clamps are tight....really tight. Often when they get old they don' t close all the way tight.

Check the simple stuff first, like battery and the connection at the starter.

Have you tried placing it in N to start?

These are the classic signs of a bad armature. The next time this happens, have someone hold the key in the start position and whack the starter body with a hammer. If it then does it's job, you need a new starter. The fact that you hear the solenoid clicking is proof enough that you have switched power from the key to the solenoid and power from the battery to the starter. If you were lacking either of those two things, there would be no click.
