A few weeks back I yanked a blown out header off of my FJ60 and replaced it with the stock exhaust manifold. In pulling the header I noticed that a PO had seemed to have used whatever bolts were handy to mount the header. The rearmost bolt, the one near the firewall, just would not thread. I thought, what the heck, this big 'ol 17mm nut should hold the rear of the manifold on just fine. Well my slothfulness caught up with me and the manifold worked loose, as evidenced by an obnoxiously loud exhaust leak.
During the time with this leak, either the brakes or clutch but sometimes both, would feel as if there was air in the lines. This happened sporadically and usually only after 20+ miles of driving.
I finally dug out a proper bolt and sealed the manifold leak. What I noticed was that with the manifold loose the exhaust gasses from #6 were blasting both the clutch and brake lines on the firewall which, I think, would have caused the fluid to boil.
