Howdy folks. I have run into what appears to be an unusual problem with my 1995 Cruiser. The horn stopped working about the same time I noticed the airbag light was on. My horns work if I jumper the relay, so the problem is between the steering column and the relay under the hood. But I am wondering if the two problems aren't related. Any ideas?

have you removed the steering wheel, or had the steering system repaired? the spiral cable for the airbag/horn is the likely culprit. first find the codes for the SRS. If it says 'driver side squib' then I would try a new (or used) spiral cable, but be SURE to center it properly.

most likely it is the spiral cable. i had a tundra with the same problem after an accident, it had plenty of other problems, but the horn not working was due to the spiral cable. when you install it make sure that it is centered on its rotation. there should be a total of 5 rotations in it before it blows, so center it at 2 1/2 for an even rotation between left and right.

Spiral Cable. Check. Let me see how much one of those costs and whether or not I have the tools to remove a steering wheel with an airbag in it. I am more than a little sketchy about messing around with this steering wheel. I'll follow the FSM, so that should keep me safe.

Use a center punch to mark the steering wheel and steering shaft so you know how to line up the splines. A gear puller is the best tool to remove the wheel with, you will use long 6mm bolts threaded into the wheel. The column covers will need to come off to access the wiring connectors, and the spiral cable is held in place with an external snap ring.

90 seconds after battery is disconnected is sufficient.
you'll need a torx t30 to remove the airbag screws.

loosen the center nut on the column, but leave it threaded on a few turns, then grab the wheel and PULL it off. You'll need to firmly plant your feet on the firewall/floorboard area and yank at 9 and 3 o'clock. If you forget to leave the center nut on, the steering wheel will punch you in the face when it pops loose.

last time I priced a spiral cable they were over $300 but that was for a camry.

cheers!

Anyone know the stock code for the torx screws. Bought a factory wheel to replace my JDM one. Theyre missing.
