I was thinking of cutting up my stock running boards. And using thier mounts to the frame. Then adding some 2x4 and tubing on the outside with a kicker. Has anybody tried this yet? Any thoughts if it can be done? It would seem to take alot of the fab/labor out of the attachment to the frame.

The stock running boards mount directly to the body, not to the frame. The stock brackets would not be strong enough.

they'd quickly bend even if you fabbed them to mount to the frame. not worth it

I don't believe you could ever hold the weight of the 80 on the factory mounts. Any obstacle you might hit would move/dent the rocker panel area the factory boards give but the 2x4 rigid steel would not be as forgiving.
