Hey Mudders,
Just bought a HJ47 11/83 wreck (frame & body, no 2H or drivetrain).

I am looking at replacing my wiring loom in my 82 HJ47 project with the one out of the wreck, I got half way through the process when I realized they are different looms.

The 83 loom has a total different glow plug wiring setup eg the relay is in the engine bay, and it has a glow plug auto timer also the ignition switch has no 'glow plug' wiring. Also there is a whole lot of round connectors that the old loom didn't have.

So do I have a Frankenstein wreck (different model loom)? or did they change the wiring between 1982 - 1983?

If so is there any post/info that can help me marry the 82 2H to the 83 wiring?

I'm more familiar with the BJ40 and BJ42 than the HJ47.

From 1982 to 1983 the BJ42 underwent a change from "full-manual-control glow" to "superglow". And I have always considered the HJ47 to be designed basically the same (except for 2 extra cylinders, more length, and "minor" things like that). In fact, I suspect the same team of engineers designed both model series.

So, if that is the case, then I think the change to "superglow" would account for most of the loom differences,

I guess the loom in your 82 is no good? - That is a shame because I think "full-manual control" (with the "glow controller" mounted in your dash) is far superior to "superglow".

Sorry - I don't have a solution other than trying to use some of your old loom with the new one. (Unless you want to convert to "superglow" .)

After reading your post I had a bit of a look around, looks like i'll have to splice the old manual system in or make a "wilson switch", otherwise i'd have to buy a whole new set of plugs (just bought a complete new set) if i install the "super glow".

So now I gotta find some wiring diags for both my 82 & 83 preheat system, any Ideas/links?

Cost of plugs is NOTHING compared to the cost of having to buy an OEM glow relay, glow controller, ignition switch, or glow timer!

Well here is what your 82 full-manual-glow should look like: (Your's is a 12V cruiser right?)

Ignore the part numbers because most will be different for your 2H. And you have 2 extra plugs of course. And you may have a more powerful starter too.

There is an illustration of the superglow floating around on MUD too but I don't have the time right now to search for it.

And I suggest having a read of Henry James the 47th's (Chris's) "Aussi HJ47 build thread" to gain a wealth of information relating to your vehicle. I think the link is in his signature line but it can be easily found by searching too.

They did change the wiring, in October of 1982 to be exact. The '83 will definitely have the Superglow set up and given your comment about the round terminals, I imagine that the harness components in the '83 were homogenizing to the 60 series wiring, which makes sense.

Personally, I think the round terminal plugs are better than the square/rectangular ones since the round ones have a rubber o-ring to help seal them. If you need parts for the '83 harness, then a HJ60 or BJ60 of the same year would be a good place to start.

Also, with a terminal tool (they sell them at Napa for instance), you should be able to remove the wire terminals from the plastic plug and re-fit them into the square plugs, and vice versa, in a lot of cases.

I'm with Tom though in preferring the full manual set-up with glow controller coil instead of the timer. On my truck I am using a 60 series steering column with 1981 60-series ignition barrel, along with the glow controller, which allows for complete manual control by key over the glow circuit, both before starting and while the engine is running.

The Superglow does work well when everything is in good shape, however it is a *slightly* more complicated set up and the replacement parts are very expensive, if you can even still get all of them. Diagnosing problems with Superglow set-up can also be a pain.

For Superglow to be set up, you will also need the extra temp. sensor for the cylinder head, along with the current sensor and resistor (which means you need the correct intake manifold as well, since both those parts insert into the intake manifold) - do you have those parts? If not, forget the Superglow set up and go to a manual system- that would be my humble advice to you.

Good luck!

Thanks for the wiring diags and the follow ups guys.

Yes i definately will be installing the manual glow from the 82 wiring loom, the temp sensors and intake manifold sensors that henry james alluded too I don't have, nor the 6v glow plugs.

I have everything for the manual glow system, the difficult thing will be extracting it from the 82 harness in an understandable fashion  then splicing it into the 83 harness and finding an

Also if i decide to keep the 83 ignition barrel (without a "glow" position) could I just put a momentary switch on the wire that heads to the 'little g' on the glow plug relay and splice it into the radio fuse (or similar) correct?

thanks again 4 your help

Correct
