Hi all,

Im considering building my own tray for my HJ47 project. I am a good amature welder so skills and equipment arent much of an issue.

I am starting to think about drawing it up and was wondering about dimensions and weight?

My current tray is an origional after market option and its very short, I will be following the width but the length and weight leave me tinking?

How long is a normal single cab ute tray (landcruiser)? and how long would people go past the end of the chassis? is there a lega issue? departure anlge isnt a problem as my tow bar is fixed and will hit much earlier.

How much does the average single cab tray weigh? and should I be aiming for lower then that or is it just about not going overboard?

Is 50x50x3 RHS a good material for the base or do people usisally go bigger?

Thanks for any advice. !

G'day,
50x50x3 should be fine IMHO.
No idea how much it weighs, but this is what sits on the back of mine.
Total length (roll bar to rear) 2100mm
From headboard to rear 2040mm
Width 1800mm
Chassis overhang 100mm approx
and just for fun, a picture...

Thanks mate, exactly what I wanted.

a couple of questions, is it a two person lift to get it on or more?

and is that 50x50 arround the outside?

thanks again.

It's a two person lift if there's no one else around, but ideally, you'd want three. Although, if you didn't use 6mm wall steam-pipe for the roll bar, you might get away with two...
Around the outside it's 75x50 rectangular 'pipe' or whatever the correct name is...

Thanks mate,

I know im pushing my luck, but is there any chance you could take a couple of photos of how it mounts to your chassis next time your looking at it?

Whooops, try again...
No problem at all.
These pics are pretty junk, so I'll try and explain as well...There's two rails that run parallel the length of the tray. The redgum is fixed onto these via square that runs the width of the tray at intervals.
Then at the front and the back, there's 2x 50x75 running almost the width, at 310 or so apart (the distance between the mounts) and then there's a piece of 50x50 square running front to rear, at 310 long, and this is fixed to the mounts with rubber blocks between them. There's one of these front and rear. In one of the pictures, there's a rubber block missing, that's why there's a gap.
This makes the tray pretty high though (200mm between the high part of the chassis above the rear axle and the bottom of the floor), which may not be what you're looking for, but I like it that high because of the 35" tyres. For perspective, the cab has a 1" body lift.
Does this make sense, or would you like more pics?

Sorry, fixed the above...

Thanks mate,

Thats perfect, My plan is along similar lines, except Im trying to get the tray nice and low, because its a work ute.

Yep, lifting stuff on to this is not real easy, but you can't have it both ways I guess. What colour is yours gonna be?

I havnt decided yet on colour, but the frame of the tray will be killrust gloss black.

That looks good with 466 beige, my cousin's got that on his '84 HJ47.

Thats what I want to hear, mine will be beige soon!
