When I turn on my 1980 HJ45 (it’s a H not a 2H) the oil pressure on the gauge immediately climbs to the maximum. What could cause this? Oil filter? Bad oil? What’s going on?

When the oil is cold it will show very high oil pressure on startup - this is a good thing - as the engine oil warms it becomes more fluid and the oil pressure will drop. You may notice that when the engine is warm, at idle there is very low oil pressure, but as the engine speeds up the oil pressure increases.

If you don’t know when the oil was changed. Start there. Get a new oil filter and oil. See what happens. I would also remove oil pressure sensor and inspect it. You should have an oil pressure relief bolt/ spring. If this is stuck it can show high pressure. Does oil pressure drop when engine is warm?

If the oil pressure goes really high when cold and then drops to really low when warmed up, you may have a main bearing clearance problem.

I am curious where this went. BTW if anyone has a part number and source for the Oil Pressure Sensor on an H I’d appreciate it, I am not having luck finding a part number.
