Hi folks,

I'm getting ready to remove the body of my 1985 Troopy, so I can go to work on the chassis. The vehicle is in one of my shop bays now, and I intend to fabricate a couple cross-members to pick up the body at front and rear factory mounting points. I'll use four one-ton camper jacks to easily lift it straight up once the cross-members are bolted underneath.

I'd like to be able to leave the engine/trans in place, remove the radiator and grill assembly, lift the body, and then roll the whole chassis out and back into another bay.

To any of you who've done this before, is there anything major I should watch out for, besides the obvious stuff: steering shaft linkage, wiring harness, brake/clutch hydraulics, etc?

Thanks for any tips!

Be prepared for broken mounting bolts, most of them are pretty seized up by now.

Ive only ever undone the front ones on my 73 series and both broke, maybe give yours a good spray with solvent a day or 2 in advance;)

Im not 100% sure but the 60 series bolts look the same.

Hi again Darrin.

How did you go with cutting the front chassis extension off to fit your ARB bar?

You should start up a build thread for your troopy and put it all in the one thread to keep everything together.

Lots of photos too, please.

Roscoe - I'll watch for the bolt problem. 17% humidity here and never much moisture, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Simon - I used plasma to cut the frame off the next day, no worries, thanks to your measurements. My new ARB bull bar proved just a hair too narrow to slide onto the chassis rails, though. I'll have to fit it later when I'm not risking damage to the fenders wrestling it around by myself. I should post some pix.

I debated starting a rebuild thread here, but I decided it'd be better to post simple questions on specific topics rather than having a long-running thread. I have a restoration thread on my own travel weblog at...

...and that will chronicle the entire project. I'll try and remember to create a signature file on MUD so that my postings will always have the link to the blog in it.

Best,

Darrin
