This is not particularly hardcore, but I expect the hardcore folks know more about the subject of braided stainless power steering lines. For various reasons I am replacing the high pressure power steering lines on my diesel swap for a home assembled braided SS one.

The question is what is the best length (without specifically wanting a length)? Is there any benefit to having some extra length in the high pressure line (beyond the more fluid = better fluid cooling) or should I just run it the most comfortable short distance? It seems logical to me to have a minimal length high pressure line and a if I need more fluid for cooling, increase the return line or add a cooler. Anything I'm not thinking of? This question is prompted because the cobbled together hose that I am replacing was about 2.5 times the length of what seems to be the right length to make the hose.

What are you using for a PS pump?

I ended up using something similar to this, with reusable ends you can redo them on the trail with a few tools. I would make it the length you need with enough slack to prevent binding. Then you can carry a spare length for repairs. The fabric cover prevents cutting and abrasion against other stuff as well. It is very easy to assemble and you can get a variety of ends to fit your needs. They are much easier than working with traditional SS overbraid with teflon liner. The down side is you need to buy adapters for your steering components to "-6" ends. If you don't have a cooler it is supposed to help the box survive longer, just be sure to put it on the low pressure side.
