Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dan and I live in Charlotte, NC. I have been visiting this site off and on for the last few years but just recently set up a login.

Although I am new here, I am not new to Land Cruisers. I am proud to say that I have been driving the same '99 LC for about 200,000 miles. I bought it from a neighbor in 2002 with 50,000 miles. Since then got married, had two boys and a golden retriever. When our other daily driver (e430) was totaled in a minor accident I borrowed my dads '99 LX 470, and a couple weeks later, purchased it from him. The LX has 190,000 miles and just recently started having some issues. A month ago I was traveling and all dash lights lit up and the LX was shaking like a wheel was about to fall off. I was able to drive 10 miles in Raleigh rush hour traffic in the rain to get to the Lexus dealer. They called me the next day and let me know that it was the coil pack in cylinder 8 and had it fixed the next day. Yesterday I was in my way to work and the check engine light and the CDL light up. I lose almost all power and coast as far as I can going about 5 mph until I can get safely off the road. I put it in park and pulled up ih8mudand start looking for potential causes and 15 mins later I tried starting it back up and to my surprise I was able to drive it to the dealer about 10 miles away with no problems.

I have done no modifications to either vehicle since they are both daily drivers. Would love to do some mods but I learned that off-roading is risky with a daily driver. I have had trucks in the shop for to long when my off-roading broke parts.
From what I can tell it sounds like a potential cause could be the aps and/or tps. Wish I had a scangauge, after reading on other posts I think I may be investing in one soon.

Any advice would be very valuable. My wife loves her LX but she's a little freaked out that this is going to cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks to all who post on this site, great reading, has helped me a lot, just a couple weeks ago I replaced all hood and liftgate struts on both trucks and changed cabin filters. Nothing like the projects some of you all take on under the hood, but thanks to those that posted the write ups.

Welcome :flipoff2: (official MUD welcome) from Raleigh.

I like my ScanGauge II. I bought it a year ago at Advance Auto with a 40% off coupon I came across. Paid around $100 for it. I have it mounted on top of ashtray, just wedged there. Hardly noticeable. It's plugged into the OBD port full time. Very handy with those sudden CEL's.

You can see it in the bottom corner of this photo.

In regards the CEL i would at a minimum stop by an autoparts store and get it scanned to check the codes. Youve already had one coil go recently its likely the rest will follow. If you do get a code for the coil its easy to diagnose if its the coil that failed just swap with a different cylinder and see if the code changes. If you need help im sure one of the guys from ONSC in Charlotte are willing to lend a hand.

Thanks Dwight and Jdayment. I think I will place the order for the scangauge and see what comes up. Dwight, I like the way you have yours set up, clean look. I grew up just south of you in Buies creek and went to NCSU so lived in the Raleigh area for 17 yrs. looks like we have the same truck, I'll have to post pics. My LC is river rock green, the wife's LX is champagne.
Jdayment, I like the snorkel, thanks for the link, I'll keep an eye on the onsc. I was just in black mountain a month ago, looks like a beautiful area, cool downtown, and close to Asheville and all the breweries.
Thanks for the tips!

Taking it to the Lexus dealer every time it throws a code will cost an arm and a leg. Although it may be hard to find time to work on it with two little ones, it doesn't take much to keep issues at bay. These are pretty easy trucks to work on and every possible issue you will ever have is documented here. Having another one in the driveway can make problem solving a breeze. If you think it's one of the sensors, try the known-working one from the other truck...

Welcome!!

Good to see all the NC cruisers here. I'm in Wilmington and just picked up a 98 lx that I am starting to baseline. Anyone take theirs on theirs on the beaches?

Most of the rust on mine can be attributed to different stretches from Corova down to Ocracoke.

Quick update- the shop called today to let me know that the throttle assembly needs to be replaced, which sounds right based on what I have read here. They quoted me a repair cost of $1,700 with new parts and warranty. I was able to get a used assembly from a wrecked LX for $380 and they said they would install for $200. If it was a third vehicle for my family I would be interested in trying to tackle it myself, with ih8mud resources to turn to, but since it's not and they are giving me a loaner it seems like a reasonable alternative to the first option.

Unfortunately the used throttle body I ordered and delivered to the dealership for install has some issues. The service guy says it won't work. Any suggestions, please? Is this something that could be remedied by replacing the TPS and cleaning, without removing the whole assembly?
