Greetings!
I live in Asheville, NC. Have a '90 FJ62 w/ around 150K. Just joined the 3FE yahoo group & have been reading up @ ih8mud for a little bit, but this is my first post! I've some mechanical experience and maintain my vehicles, but used to old chevys - this is my first 4x4 and certainly the first time I've had to use metric!

My FJ's driven local every couple days and I drive a 200 mile trip every 2-4 weeks. Engine runs well. Get 14-16 mpg highway. One day I'll make a project out of it and park it to work on rust and
suspension. As of now, I fix what's needed and try to stay ahead of anything major.

I have the same problem posted here: http://www.birfield.com/archives/html/3FE/2005-05/msg00006.html
I was driving away from my storage unit when I lost all control. I walked back, got some tools and started poking around. My drag link end had no grease and the link joint knob had popped right out of the drag link. I didn't disassemble the end, just cleaned it till the frozen spring started moving again and jacked up the drag link under the pitman arm and jumped on the bumper till the knob popped back in! The ball stud seats are pretty worn, with a lot of vertical play under the pitman arm. So I tied the drag link against the pitman arm with wire to make sure the damn thing wouldn't pop out while I was driving home!

I'd like to eventually take this FJ off road, but for now it's only on roads. I want to be safe to drive w/o spending a ton of money. Since the ball stud seats are so worn & ungreased, the boot was ripped, & there's a lot of play in the steering; I figured just replace all the ends rather than rebuild the drag link ends.

Sooooooo, there's my newbie introduction and present task at hand! My questions:

1. Replace all the tie rod ends, right?

2. Where do I buy from? Till now it's been local auto parts & toyota dealer. There's a tie rod replace kit @ coolcruisers for $70. http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/tierodenfj62.html. Where do I shop?

3. I need to replace a front leaf spring, when I got time & $, I'd like to just replace all suspension w/ a lift kit & advice on where to get the lift from is appreciated, but not immediate. When it does happen, what would the steering linkage need to accommodate a 2-3" lift?

4. I ordered a Toyota service manual, ended up w/ a '88 repair manual & mine's a 90 FJ62. Haven't noticed any differences yet, will the 88 manual work for my 90?

5. Now that I'm working on steering, I see that section is missing from my manual and to be found in the Chassis & Body Repair Manual! Is this other manual worth getting?

Thanks all! Sure glad to find some experience & advice.

first of all - welcome! :flipoff2: (official noob mud welcome)

so i can't chime in on anything specific to a 62, as i've always had 60's. BUT - i'll give you my .02 and hope it helps.

1- it can't hurt - the old ones were probably 20 years old so new should last you a bit!

2- Napa and stealership can only go so far. To find part #'s check out toyodiy.com - search by VIN or vehicle model/year. Then search online to find good price. OR call Cdan at American Toyota in Albeq. NM. Great guy and toyota parts at a mud discount!

3- check the parting out section if you just need one spring. Should be able to pick it up for cheap. Someone will be moving to OME's and you might even find one local'ish!
As for 2-3" lift - first off read the FAQ. OME is the gold standard, but there are a lot of options. I have a BDS which is OK, stiff and rides high which i don't mind so far. Parabolics etc and Alcans etc. I don't think you will have any issues w/ 2-3" of lift - possibly some shims (which i think i need to do). As for *where* - talk to kurt at cruiser outfitters (Cruiser Outfitters)

4- manuals = good. Get them and you won't regret the $ saved.

5- what are you trying to look at? a lot of the time one of us w/ the correct manual (mines for a 60) can post a quick scan to help out if you are in a pinch. Otherwise get the manual - it's $ well spent.

now post pics of your rig!

Welcome to the madness

sl33py is right, change all the ends. You should be able to get all four for a bit over a $100.

I can tell you that the 89 and 90 manuals are pretty much identical and include the chassis and body manual. Rather than spend more money on a partial manual, back track and get the one for the 90 model year, Toyota pub #RM154U. Available from the following sources

Man-A-Fre and Specter Off Road are both great places to deal with for parts, at least have been for me. Lots of others, start surfing the web.

I didn't need shims with a 2-3" lift and no changes are needed in the steering either. But make sure you raise the LSP and BV assembly equal to the lift. The factory manual will tell you what this valve is, but basically lifting it makes sure your rear brakes still work!

My 62 has been a great rig.

Best of Luck

Tony

PS If you haven't found out already your standard wrenches will still work on metric bolts down to about 13mm (around 1/2") then you need the metrics

CruiserDan from American Toyota and Kurt from Cruiser Outfitters will become your parts supplying friends. I doubt you can find a bad word about either on this board. Kurt has lots of quality aftermarket and upgrade stuff, and Dan is a great source for any OEM stuff you need.

Toyota of dallas or as they are know TRDPARTS4u.com. They are TLCA members and are sponsor the Lonestar Jamboree. I also us CDAN and Kurt. I only use $OR (Spector offroad) or MAF when I cant find it anywhere else. They have the parts but are always expensive. They also have a way of nailing you on shipping. Just got a set of ubolts and a Ubolt skid plate for $170 and they hit me for $30 shipping after the fact. I hate it that they wont give you shipping up front.

Inside every Land Cruiser lies a maddening sickness for which there is no cure...Welcome :D.

I got my rod ends ( all 4 ) from CCOT for 69.99 Nice quality stuff & quick ship.

I'm in Indiana, but I have a set of stock front springs, if you can't find any closer.

I lifted mine 4" and needed no major steering mods.

Lost of great names can be found on mudd for parts. Just listen to the voices of experience.

RALPH HAYES TOYOTA 1-800-868-8066

Call Rick there. It'll save you some money in shipping since they are in greenville, SC. Also, post up on the Upstate Cruiser's site.
