Anyone in the club have a hex die crimping tool? I have about 20 lugs I need to crimp on 1/0 and 6 AWG cable.. Trying to finish everything prior to GSMTR. Time moves quickly when working to a deadline.

I don't have the hex ones, but i have a pair of HB ratcheting crimpers you can use if you want. They work fairly well.

I usually just use my lineman pliers and solder anything lower gauge than 12.

Just saw that you are working w/ 1gauge too. For this size why not just use a chisel and solder?

I bought one of those anvil type crimpers that you whack with a hammer but after watching on YouTube what the inside of a good hex crimp looks like I figured l'd throw the question out there.

If no one has one I may pick one up and throw it in to the loaner tools pool for the club after I'm done. I figure I'm not the only one left to wire up a winch or second battery.

For 6ga to 1/0 I use a propane or acetylene torch and solder. Make a solder plug, stick it in the lug, heat it (flux wire and lug, of course) and insert the wire into the lug. Easy peasy.

I could certainly use some of those hex crimps if you do decide to buy a pair and loan them out to the club.
Last time I checked they were a $100 plus type of tool.

if you go the solder route I believe that Autozone carries these. The Burke Auto Parts might have them.

I watched a U-tube vido where the guy used a larged vise to compress the hammer type crimper instead of whacking. Seemed to work pretty well.

I usually crimp before solder incase the somthing shorts. Battery cables can get pretty hot.

This is the youtube video I watched that showed what a good hex crimp looks like on the inside. Look at around 1:40.

Of course this is probably a $1000+ crimper but still.

Just so everyone knows, I did end up buying a hex crimper off fleabay. Worked great though and I'm willing to loan it out to club members if they need it. Just let me know.

Patrick,

I have some winch cables to fab, would love to borrow the crimper. Any chance you will make it to the meeting on June 5?
