What's your opinion being a 100 owner who has more than put his truck to use over these past few years?

Top 10 Used Overland Vehicles

what do others say? Some of the vehicles on that list make me wonder what theyre smoking....

Vitara!? LR3? Benz wagon isnt even an Overland rig!

Oh I think it might be more of a marketing ploy by Scott (owner of Expedition Portal and Overland Journal, et al, to stir up posting on Expedition Portal. And posts like that one sure get everyone's opinions & posts flying as well as panties all bunched up!

Its good for business ;)

To answer your question: I've had mine for a little over 6 years and have added 115k miles on it. It really fits my requirements very very well. I'd do it again pretty much the same way. I went back and forth on the 80 versus 100 (and actually the 60/62 Series also was contemplated) back in '04 while I was trying to figure out what platform I wanted to build/invest in. And for me, knowing the rig was going to accumulate a fair amount of mass as well as eventually be pulling a trailer, the 2UZFE won out. And I really have zero regrets. So for my needs/application/interests its been "the best" for me...

From my very limited knowledge, the only real big hole in the 100 series is the rear axle issues that some people have and the typical build variations where one rig will get 15 mpg loaded running 80 mph and another will get 9.

I love them, but at 10K plus for a good used one, I'll be loving from a distance for a while longer.

I take exception to the 4runner on the list.

While I agree they are extremely dependable and our V6 model gets 19-21.6 mpg average on short trips and has tons of power, it has got to be the most uncomfortable vehicle this side of an early Tacoma to drive and ride in.

The seats are square chunks of high density foam that offer support in all the wrong places. The floorboards are way too small and the seat/floor angle makes me a cripple in just a few hours of riding.

This slays me

On the road, the 100 series will cruise comfortably at 85 mph all day long

All day long? if you are cruising in a 100 with a stock tank at 85 mph you will be stopping about every three hours to re-fuel. But you will be comfortable between fuel stops. :grinpimp:

Summary: Every other continent figured out this was the best Land Cruiser ever made a few years ago - ok, we agree.

Other continents get lots of other Land Cruiser models that are very popular, but unavailable in N America. Like the 70 series, which are actual utilitarian trucks, like the 40 series, without the frills and electronics you find on the 100 series. I'd bet a six pack of Anchor Steam they out sell the 100 2:1 in places like Oz an S Africa where they are used as work trucks in remote regions by ranchers and miners.

Lots of Benz and BMW sedans were used for Overlanding! Overlanding is not just about going four wheeling:D Check out this book!

Yeah, but Scott titled his "article" as vehicles you can purchase in NA and use for overlanding around the world and I am pretty sure no one in NA is using a MB for overlanding. Besides most of the MB sedan/wagons that were being used for overlanding are older than 1990 cutoff he mentioned as well, their quality went into the toilet especially over the last 20 years.

I read that book and it was a great read. :p

Still an article meant to create discussion.

What Dan doesn't disclose is that he's got a good "support team" for his Hunday on our excursions...

Yep...and one new spare.

sweet. And just when I thought I was going to get to see the KK you go and break s*** and head home! haha

This year's killing my ability to get out with the KK and camp! I wanted to drag it out to Pyramid and spend a couple days camping and fishing on the beach...but the weather just never cooperated more than about 1/4 day the entire "spring". Oh well.

didnt miss much... Pyramid has been the s***s for a while. My boss went yesterday and caught nothing but 6" chubs the whole day! Saw some bruisers chasing the schools of chubs around, but thats about it.

Im going to "borrow" my dads boat and hit Stampede! Thats the hot ticket right now.

Yeah a couple of other buddies have been doing great at Stampede on macs and kokes the past 3-weeks. Ditto for Tahoe.

I heard from another source they were catching kokes on fly rod with 15' tippet off the damn last week! And a guy I know who lives in Walker caught a 9lb (!!!) Alpers almost out his back door on the WW.
