Here is my carb issue.

It appears that my Cruiser is "over carbed". It is not in good shape and it has been Mickey Moused. I need a new carb but my question is this. I can get a whole new Weber38 for around $605 or I can try and get the engine back to original by having a used Aisan carb rebuilt and getting used linkage and air cleaner. I have nothing original. This will cost me $750. I also would need to put on a new intake and manifold. $125

So in summary:
Weber38 with adapters...........$605
Aisan w/ everything needed....$875

Is it worth the extra $270?

i have a weber...love it...but if i had to pick again ...i would pick oem.

less tweeking to get right...webers are out of the box rich and need tweeking to get right sometimes

why new intake manifold?

I was told the opposite. I was told that Webers are easier to tweak whereas Aisan have to be done professionally if you have no mechanical skills. That being me.
Nothing runs more rich than what I have now.

Is that price for a new Aisan Carb? I used the search on here and found a used on for under $100 and the rest of the linkage on here for pretty cheap. Even if you found one that needed rebuilt you should not be in to it for even close to that much money. I am happy with mine since going back to OEM. Be patient use the search and save some money!

The carb is $200 and I have to buy the stock Air cleaner and everything. I have absolutely nothing from the OEM carb set up. I also have to pay to have it rebuilt which is included in the given price.

Although not on a TLC I have worked on Webbers (VW engines) they can be very picky. I picked up an Asin carb on e-bay for $60.00, spent $45.00 on a rebuild kit plus cleaner, rags and about 2-3 hours of my time and I can say that it is one of the best running maintenance free carbs I have ever worked on. You should not have to replace your intake manifold, more than likely there is an adapter plate mounted in place of were the OEM Carb would bolt to, if so remove it and bam your in business. If you need an air cleaner assembly, I have one you can have for the cost of shipping, it is not pretty and it is off of a 1970 FJ40, send me a PM if interested. Jim C is a whiz with theses carbs I think he charges about $250 for the rebuild which I think includes some performance enhancements. This stuff is really not that hard, you should be able to accomplish this with ease.
