Doing a bit of work on my girls FJ75 Troopy,3F motor same as 60 series, new carb, other bits and pieces,so we got a Pertronix kit sent from USA,thought it would be good to replace points, arrived yesterday. Kit no 1662.
So i put it in as per instructions, black to neg on coil, red to positive side on ballast resistor, ran earth from module plate to dissy body.
Would not fire, tried red on coil positive, same result:mad::mad::mad:

Put points back in,all good.

HELP! Where do i go next? Faulty unit? How do i test it?

I have a Pertronix setup on my 1986 FJ 60. I can look at it tomorrow. It was in the truck when i bought it. I will look over the wiring and see if I can offer you any advice.

thanks shaggy,might come in handy

I hate to be 'that guy', but why not an electronic system from a later 2F or possibly 3F? Known to work, work well, and last a long time.

Pertronix is reportedly good about warranty issues as I've known more than a couple who needed it, but that won't help you much if you're stuck in the Outback or some other remote place. I advise against them for off road use here in the States. Uh oh, here come the Pertronix Defenders....
Guys, before decrying my bashing consider his location and what he's going to have to go thru if there isn't a warranty vendor in OZ.

A pertronix in a 60-series, at least here in the States, is as rare as Paris Hilton driving a mini-van. You'd be better off posting in the 40 section for diagnostic advice.

Gold Chaser: I have that same kit in my 3F. Had to change to ballast resistor from the factory toyota one to the one that suited the pertronix kit. OnTrak Automotive in ferntree gully sold me mine, shipped it to gold coast for me. They are a distributor and may have some more info for you: 03) 9753 5565 for OnTrak

NTSQD: in aus, we never got electronic ignition until the 3FE in the first of the 80 series. Everything previous, so 2f and 3f's in 60's all had points.

So you had no spark until you changed ballast resistor mutley?
Has it been a good thing since you got it sorted,im allready thinking of staying with points.
I didnt know you could buy a whole electronic dissy for them also, seen one on ebay in aust for $325 inc coil, leads.
Tell me this pertronix is good or its goin in the bin!

Those that do work seem to work well. When they don't they're usually done. First that I've heard of a specific ballast resistor being needed. I thought that they wanted 12 VDC from upstream of an ballast resistor?

Mutley: You mean to tell me that OZ got all of the other cool guy stuff, but got screwed with points for that long? How strange. I'm guessing that the 3FE has it's timing controlled by the ECU. Wonder if the top part of the 3FE's dizzy can be easily blended with the 2F's point lower? That would get you the original mechanical and vacuum advance coupled with the OE electronic ignition w/o needing to send to the States for parts.

Out here in Africa we also never got 3F-E .
So all of us has ditched the points / condensor and fitted Petronix . I am convinced the car pulls better . ( I do though carry a set of points and condensor with me as spare parts in case the Petronix dies in the bush. )

So far five years of happy service and no need to change points .
My setup I just bypassed the ballast resistor . ( is it necessary with Petronix ?)

No mutley its gone in for rust repairs, back in a few days,i'll test it when its at home next,go from there. Ill sort it out.:hhmm:

How'd you go wiring it up, end up getting it to go?

i'm thinking of getting a petronix igniter for my fj26 (3f) as i've been having a heap of trouble with the points lately. not sure if i want to pay the $230 the mechanic wants to install them though.

I've been running the Pertronix for many years. First in the 1F and now in a 2F, though always in a '69ish/non-USA dizzy.
Never ran a ballast resistor. No earth from module to dizzy body.
