So I have been trying to rebuild my wheel cylinders. But after taking all of them off, all of them are too rusted to come apart except one. How do I get them apart when they are that seized up?
What would you guys recommend. Would it be better or cheaper to go with new wheel cylinders? Or swap out for disc brakes? And if so what would it take to go to discs? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi All:

Are these the front or rear brakes?

If front I'd advise upgrading to disc brakes.

If rear, discs are still a better bet. I do have some used rear wheel cylinders you can have for the cost of shipping.

Good luck!

Alan

more info would help. sounds like when you say all you mean 4. you have lots of reading to do. if you do have 4 wheel drum you should probably get disc in the front at minimum. rear disc kit is available from poser i believe. IH8MUD.com - Technical happy reading and welcome to mud.

I personally went with after market cylinders when my rears went out, and started compiling parts for the disc brake changeover. This allowed me to still drive my cruiser, inexpensively, and safely, in the interrim of a swap over.

Unless you are hell bent on keeping everything original, and looking for a resto, my opinion is do the disc brakes, and never look back...

I went with CCOT rear wheel cylinders on my '77 when mine were too frozen to rebuild. For just a little more money I could have had rear discs. Should have done the swap.

For you, you'll need a later model FJ40 front axle or minitruck/FJ60 outer axle parts for the front, a disc brake kit for the rear, proportioning valve and possibly brake lines and other miscellaneous items to do a full swapover. Won't be near as cheap and will be a lot more work.
