I can't get my t-case cover off. It won't pull off due to an obstruction underneath. Here is a pic below. My finger is pointing where its getting stuck at. My question is for those who have rebuilt their t-case while on the truck did you have to lower your tranny at all? What is the secret to getting that cover off? Everything has been smooth as butter up to now. Please help...i am driving my grandmothers 98' Mercury to work and back and i feel like a gansta in a lower rider making drug runs. I am having cruiser withdraw!

Thanks Guys.

You have to lower the tranny. While supporting the tranny/t-case combo on a floor jack, remove the 8 bolts (4 per side) that secure the cross member to the chassis. Lower the whole mess a few inches and support with a jack stand for safety. You will now be able to remove the rear half of the t-case.

lower the tranny. it will be a lot easier on the engine mounts if you loosen the bolts on them too.
alos, check with your fsm that the tranny is in the right gear to take the cover off.

I am not taking the tranny cover off, just the t-case. I am replacing the gasket and the o-ring between the two. Let me ask ya'll this....since i am lowering the tranny by loosening the 8 bolts by an inch or so does it put any strain on th 3fe? When you say engine mounts are you referring to the ones that hold the engine in place in the engine bay?

sorry with teh bad pic ..

was taken with my movil phone .. but I don't need to lower my tranny to pollout the rear case.

Your truck is also a FJ60 so the placement might be different between a that and a 62.

I have both a FJ-60 and FJ-62 and the FJ-62 requires lowering the tranny/t-case combo where the FJ-60 does not.

Ask me how I know!

How do you know this Don? Also, how far did you lower your tranny? Did you have any issues in the engine bay when you did this? Did you loosen the engine mounts or anything?

I had to rebuild the t-case on my 62 last year is how I know. As far as the engine bay foes, I just leaft the hood open to ensure that the engine did not contact the hood. As you lower the tranny/t-case combo, the engine will pivot at the motor mounts causing the front of the engine to move up as the tranny/t-case moves down.

The amount that you have to lower the assembly is minor (1-2" if I recall) so I did not worry about the effects of the lowering on the motor mounts and not other obstructions occured as far as I can recall. I suppose if one was able to lower the combo far enough, the fan would contact the shroud, but that would require quite a bit of lowering in my opinion.

HTH...Don

Thanks Don, i just need about 1-2 inches and it will come off fine. Thanks for the info.
