I have a college student staying with me that has a 1993 Ford Sable. The rear brake linings are done so i bought a new set. Trouble is I can't seem to get the piston pushed back into the caliper to be able to get the clearance to install the new pads.
This rear rotor setup has a park brake cable that pulls a lever with a shaft going into the same end of the caliper where the oil line goes.
Is there some trick to getting the piston to retract?
I used the normal water pump pliers, lever and even a big c-clamp without any luck. Is there some mechanism that ratchets inside to take up the travel as the pads wear?
Thanks

if the parking brake is in the main caliper, you may have to rotate the piston while you press back. I know late-model VWs are like that. failure to do so could lead to damage. If it is that kind of setup, you may have already fxxxed them up.

I don't know for certain, as I don't know anything about those cars, but I'd find someone who did and ask them if the pistons need to be rotated as they're compressed.

If so, borrow the tool from Autozone to do it. they cahrge you like $50 but then refund it when you return it.

canadian tire have some loan a tool items,
auto parts plus/NAPA do too (and they're more likely to know WTF they have and what it's for

Sounds like you are right. I don't know if we have an Autozone store in this part of the world though. At least I know what I am looking for now.

No Prob.

Good luck finding the tool. I just bought the one at Autozone when I did the rear brakes on the wife's Jetta. It seemed to be a pretty nice tool, and I figured I'd most likely being doing brakes again one day, so I asked 'em if I could just buy it... The guy at the store told me if I wanted it that much to just keep it, that's what the $50 deposit was for.

Thanks for the tip gladly!
The gals did some calling as I wrote down the phone numbers of auto parts places... NAPA and Canadian Tire had something. The girlfriend stopped by NAPA on the way home and for $17.11 bought some MAde IN CHINA cube that has various arrangement of protruding shapes on the 6 sides and all you do is slide it onto a 3/8" drive ratchet with a short extension. Match up some pattern on the cube that will mesh with your piston face in the caliper, press in to keep a grip on the piston and turn clockwise. Worked darn slick I must say!
Thanks a bunch guys you saved me a lot of time!
