I am located in Canada, however I am dead against the right hand drive vehicles (im useless with my left hand)!!! What about taking an 88 or 89 FJ-62 in good shape and putting a turbo diesel and manual tranny into it, is this possible? Where can I find these parts? Thanks

If I may go out on a limb here. I'm sure there's a decent, somewhat honest importer in your location who will be willing to search around Europe for you to find a decent later model HJ61 in say France, or Germany. Not sure where would be best to search, but it might be cheaper to buy and import one from the Old World than to build one anew at home, not to mention all factory. Just an idea. :grinpimp:

Luxury Imports (Crushers) is a mud supporting vender, and brings trucks in from Japan. Not sure if he brings in any from Europe, but couldn't hurt to check. Plus he is located in Ontario somewhere now.

Here comes a stupid question: What countries in Europe or around the world would have LHD HJ-61 in manual tranny's?? This will help me norrow down my search and explain where I want a good reliable importer to look. Thanks

Well, if you want to avoid right hand drive, the UK and Ireland are the only countries in Europe that have sizable car markets with RHD, all other countries in Europe are just like the US and Canada, LHD and on the proper side of the road.

EDIT:
Major RHD: Japan, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, India, UK, Ireland
Major LHD: North America, Continental Europe, GCC, Central America, South America (except Guyana and Suriname which are RHD), China (except Hong Kong and Macau)

All info was researched via Wikipedia. A little bit of research to find out which nations are RHD and LHD is easy. And I'm willing to bet aside from North America, all of those LHD markets probably had Turbo Diesel HJ61s.

So now I have to pick up the phone and find a good importer who can bring in a LHD HJ-61. Wish me luck, im gonna need it!! I don't even know where to start, anyone have any other leads to importers who may be able to do such an order??

Check in the diesel section, I think there might be a list of importers in the stickied threads at the top.

So if I bought a N. American 88-90 FJ-62. What would the easiest turbo diesel and manual tranny swap be?? Does the 12HT and H55F tranny bolt into place fairly easily into an FJ-62?? Is there another combo that would be better?? Thanks

Buy Mel Lowe's rig, or LynchMob's 13BT FJ62 with auto tranny listed in the "for sale" section and you'd be way ahead time and money wise. I'd personally take an auto over a manual, but would be fine with either one. Why are you so attached to the manual?

I used to be this noob. Still am for the most part. I love the learning curve...

Drake: Are you an experienced wrench? Do you have $15K to drop? Do you have a year's worth of weekend time to spare? If not, forget the conversion, but factory or somebody else's completed conversion. Seriously. It can be done on the cheap, but talk to Mel Lowe...you'll need to be ultra dedicated, a real networker and be nearly a full time cruiser man.

Lastly, use the search function (advanced) here. It is your friend. Every quesiton you've asked thus far has been asked and answered countless times. The lazy way will not get you better answers. There's an absolute gold mine of info floating around on Mud, all waiting for you to discover.

Good luck.

There is no FJ61... It's FJ,BJ and HJ 60... then there is FJ62 or HJ61 right? :hhmm::confused:

I used to think that, and was proven wrong (well, sort of). See posts 35 and 43:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/179554-fj61-only-rh.html

However, I will admit that I have not seen a frame stamp or vin plate that says FJ61 yet...

Also, no FJ61 here, and it seems pretty all-inclusive:

But note two errors or omissions:
He's got the FJ62 as having the H151F 5-speed (when we all know it was the Auto A440F, at least in the States), and he's got the HJ60 has sporting the H42, when I know first hand that it had, in fact, the H41 (at least some, if not all).
