im stuck between a rock and a hard place with this new 86 fj 60 i just picked it doesnt run and im trying to weigh all my options and im a lil new to this and on a budget any one have a suggewstion rebuild? buy a used 2f and swap or v8 swap somebody help me please
what means "doesn't run"? does it have new fuel, new fuel filters, new spark plugs and air filters, is it turning over, did it run before you bought it? what have you done to try & get it to run so far?
fire triangle holds true everywhere on terra firma: fuel, air, spark.
Well I got it for a good price knowing that the engine was no good the head got to hot and warped blowing the gasket and destroying the rear piston so that's why I didn't know if I nshould salvage what I have or swap
Well I'm handy with a wrench plus I have lots of gear head friends I'm in kansas city mo with a low budget kinda piece by piece for now def not endless funds ......so cruisin fj 60 you suggest a 2f swap?
I think you'll find the I-6 toyota engine fairly expensive to rebuild and expensive parts too, in comparison to "mainstream" vehicles. I think you would come out cheaper swapping in a old school carb setup SBC 350. Check out the downey web site and the advance adapters web site for their adaper bellhouings setups. You will need someone with fabrication and welding skills to help you if you don't posses those yourself to do a swap. Its also hard to find a mechanics who know much about the old school cruisers and then again it get $$. Unless you can do a lot of the work yourself a land cruiser is fairly expensive any way you turn. The cheapest way to move would be if you could find running engine free from someone who did a swap or a good parts engine. You might want to check out the for sale area. If you don't know....most if not everything on a land cruiser is unique....its not shared by other toyota products, so parts and things can be hard to find at times. The best advice is to read through some of these threads to see what others have done. You might come across a good deal on an engine where someoone is parting out a truck. Check out the classfied area on this board. If it were me and I had a toasted I-6 engine, I would go with a GM SBC and not look back, but thats only my view. YOu could do a carb setup on a SBC 5.7 fairly cheap.
another vote for a swap. keep your eyes peeled for used running 2f's.
and spend some time learning how the 'search' function works on here so you can edjumacate yourself. hook up w/the local toyota 4wd club & learn from their busted knuckles...
Does mileage really matter on a used 2f I have one with 160,000 for 750 dollars I appreciate everybodies help I wouldn't mind a v8 swap but I thought that was the more expensive route is the another I 6 that will adapt to the fj60 not necisarilly made by toyota??

I think the cheapest solution by far is to swap in a used 2F. $750 is on the high side, but if in good shape, not a ripoff. Check the for sale forum, and craigslist and cruiserparts.
You need to try posting this in the TLCA/CLubhouse forum under Tornado alley cruisers. There is a large group of LC owners in KC. Great spot to get to know some fellow owners and find helpful info.
If you are doing this low=budget, a used 2F is the way to go. Be patient, there will be people on this board who are pulling good 2Fs to do V8 swaps so put something in the wanted section.
I'd get your 2F running first (or at least try to). Determine the shape of it. Then you might have a better understanding of what you'd like to do with it.
As noted, check out cruiserparts.net. Good site, good service, good products at reasonable prices. They will have all options from a bolt-in used motor to all the bits and pieces you'll need for a rebuild of the 2F you currently have. Good luck and keep us posted!
Cheapest way hands down is to get a used 2F and spend a weekend throwing it in. Then you have spare parts from the non working engine to take with you wheeling.
