Just bought a 1988 LJ70 originally imported from France. After giving my insurance company the VIN they said it does not show in their records. What can I do to get the vehicle insured?

Of course they can't find the VIN on record ..... "It's NOT on record"
My State Farm agent required a photo of the JDM VIN which I was glad to supply. Sounds like the issue is with your agent and not with the insurance company itself. Glad it worked out for you.
I would insist that my vehicle was documented correctly, including the year of production, and if the local agent and home office couldn't accomplish this relatively easy task, I would go elsewhere. I have registered and insured foreign vehicles for the last 20 years and I have never been told that we will let the "home office" deal with it.I just went through this today. DMV was okay with the VIN but the insurance company didn't know what to do. Although, when the VIN was input to the system it came back as model year 1980. The vehicle has been verified as a 1989. The solution was to insure it as a 1980 with an additional comment staying that the vehicle has a non USA VIN and was manufactured in 1989. The agent said that covers our butts and to let the home office deal with it. I was also told on the event of a claim, the VIN is used for verification not the year of manufacture. It didn't leave me with a warm fuzzy but I have insurance. I think...
Oh believe me. It will be corrected. I don't like those kinds of messy loose ends. Mr Murphy is all too willing to show up. I just had to get it insured to meet registration deadlines. Conducting business in this state can be challenging and I've learned that simple things can be quite difficult. Usually with some added effort the outcome is acceptable. And again, this looks like it's going to be one of those things. Thanks.I would insist that my vehicle was documented correctly, including the year of production, and if the local agent and home office couldn't accomplish this relatively easy task, I would go elsewhere. You might wreck your Cruiser and find out that "no one" is dealing with it.
Thanks, MicahMan! I knew a fellow mudder would come to the rescue and offer sound advice. I'll probably be giving you a call...As a licensed agent and one who insures about 25 imported diesels here in Utah your guy botched it. Having the card or policy not showing the correct year would be not only a headache but a possible loophole for the company to reduce, or reject coverage. "Notes" never hold up to policy language. Get with an independent agent that writes for a number of companies they will be able to find coverage. Or go through a specialty company like Hagerty if it gets that crazy. They will at least know how to handle a strange vin.
Or call me and I can help find an agent in your neck of the woods.
