Hey guys!

Have an '85 FJ60 that's mostly in...decent?...shape. Unfortunately for him, I'm about as mechanically inclined as a squirrel. While pulling off the carb I noticed this hose was broken...and since I know only the very basics, tracking down what it is or does hasn't provided very many results. But I'm guessing it should be replaced before I putter around much more in him.

Can anyone help a girl out?

Also...I totally stole this image from another thread--which I can no longer find. Thank you mystery contributor!

all that hose does is it takes warm air from the exhaust to help on start up, then the valve should close with vacumn and only take in cold air thru the big tube.
many, many rigs don't have that tube and many don't have the other piece on the exhaust manifold that small tube connect to.

I don't have that hose on my rig. Also a FSM can definitely help you identify hoses and parts. Thats kinda how I am learning at least.

The hot air intake duct can be useful in very cold climates. But fundamentally, it's an emissions component. In smog test areas, that duct is required to be installed in order for the engine to pass a smog test. It's part of the visual inspection.

You can buy a replacement Gates duct that will fit the neck on the air cleaner housing on eBay. Shipped from the UK.
I used it. It fits perfectly.

Hey! Another Southern cruiser! Pull the hose off and take it to your local auto parts store. They usually have replacement hose in various sizes. It might be silver in color like OSS displayed and longer than you need but you can cut it easily with scissors. A worthwhile and easy fix.

I wasn't going to post 'cause our esteemed colleagues pretty much covered it but then I thought of something.

I used this hose from McMaster (coulda sworn on OS's recommendation?) 55125K93 (2 1/4" ID)

It's a small thing but hey no harm in mentioning it. The cool part about this tube, is the spiral wire holds the tube in the extended position. So if you cut it a couple inches long, it's the first thing to line up when reattaching the air cleaner. Then carb, then pcv, etc. Makes putting the air cleaner on just a little easier. Which is something you do a lot of.

Putter on!

Similarly as above, i opted to go for the Porsche equivalent for heater hose. It’s a hair big but slips right over nicely and passes the visual for California, plus it’s black.

Thanks guys!!

Got a hose on the way! It doesn't get too cold here in the mountains of NC but I want to give the old man as much help as possible.

First thing I did was take a piece of the hose into a local parts store, no dice. And I found another hose that I assume will have to be ordered as well, it's sheared off at the top right where it's supposed to connect. A few days ago I thought I found a thread where someone listed out hoses for the engine compartment and parts numbers to get them all ordered...but I cannot, for the life of me, find it again.

But! Did find a drop box link to some Service Manuals, which provided a diagram that allowed for some coloring action!

What happens if that thing isn't connected? And is there something I'm overlooking in the service manual for identifying these things?

That hose is part of your egr system (exhaust gas recirculation). If it's not connected then your emissions system will not function properly. The truck will run but it won't be clean. There's a ton of information on the egr system on this forum.

I'll correct cps. Easy to get the systems mixed up.
The picture above is showing the Air Injection system. It's an emissions system too. If your cruiser requires smog tests, then everything in that picture needs to be hooked up.
If you don't need to smog it, forget about it. The top arrow points to a one way check valve. Make sure it's not puffing out exhaust if there isn't a hose connected to it.

The emissions manual identifies every smog component and explains how everything works. You should definitely download it. (It's free)
