Hey guys, when I was underneath my LX this weekend replacing all the fluids (BTW is insanely tight down there, talk about low ground clearance) I came across some stuff CV axles. I am not familiar with CV axles at all as this is my first cruiser that does not have a solid front axle. My Hilux is IFS, but I have never had an issue with that truck.

Anyways what is this?

The boots are clean and dry, I don't see a leak anywhere.

Sorry for the crappy pics. It's tight down there and I could only use my cell phone.

Am I looking at what's left from a previous boot leak from the PO?

Thanks guys

CVs are throwing grease. Need to re-grease (maybe), but definitely re-clamp. It looks mighty white. If the CVs had water in them, you'll want to clean and re-grease properly. How many miles?

It's got 160k. What's crazy is the boots and cv axles themselves are completely clean. I thought I would see something on them and that is what was throwing me off.

Axles are throwing grease and seems to have some water mixed with it. The centrifugal force keeps the boots somewhat clean while spreading grease on everything else. Would be a good idea to rebuild with new boots, grease and clamps.

Suggest the boot kit from Toyota and the screw clamps from McMaster Carr. PFRAN has a kit just for for this.

Sounds like I have another project to add to the list. Time to do some more searching on MUD on how to do this project. Thanks guys

Really????? I have seen several posts on MUD where people cuss without blurring anything out and there was never any mention to them not to do it. But hey man if that makes you feel powerful and important then more power to you. Keep policing on brother.

I don't think that the gutter is the standard we should shoot for. And Eric is a great mod so take it easy. Pretty bold for post #18, especially if you expect help in the future...

"Crap" would be acceptable. ...eta apparently the "c-word" equivalent to the "s-word" was filtered out by the system...maybe "stuff" is the preferred alternate to either the s- or the c- description of what I shovel out of the horse stalls every morning...

No need for the s-word here, imo. Although I'd be banned in a nano-second if I quoted what I said the last time I bashed my thumb with a 20-ouncer. :censor::censor::censor::censor:

As an example, I expect almost any vocabulary on ar15.com, but it's usually in context and not related to auto stuff.

It's refreshing not to see it here, again, imo.

Anyway, welcome to mud.

Steve

Wow this thread got sidetracked quick. Ok my most sincerest apologies to anyone I have offended, that certainly was not my intention at all. I honestly did not think that the word s*@t would offend anyone, especially when I have seen the word used in full on thread posts and nothing was mentioned then. So please forgive me for making an assumption based on past history. My appologies to Eric, I am sure you are a great mod. I too am a mod on another toyota forum and I know how much work it takes. I guess I just took exception because I would never post anything public on the forum, I would have sent a PM. Especially, with a noob to the forum. From now on I will make sure to keep everything completely PC so I don't offend anyone. Again, my appologies to anyone I might have offended in any manner.

Now back to actually trying to fix my issue.

Jeez you guys are a sensitive lot.

My suggestion: wipe the... stuff off, clean up the area with some brake cleaner. Drive it for a few days, see if it comes back. If so, time for a reboot.

Thats what I did on Saturday and so far the area is still clean. I will eventually do a reboot anyways just to make sure, but I am just trying to prioritize my "to do" list.

I'd wipe it up and see if it comes back as well but also I would advise you to take a peek in there and re-clamp. It might not spray anymore after you wipe it down but that could be from 2 VERY different reasons. The good reason is b/c PO actually repaired the issue and didn't wipe it down. The bad reason would be because there's no more grease in there to sling out! Never count on PO to come through....

Mine was doing the same thing, slinging grey grease, when I bought it 4 years ago. I just took the large clamp off, pushed the boot back and manually scraped out most of the grease with a cloth. Most of it just poured out when the clamp came off anyway. Then I refilled the CV joint and boot with fresh grease, put a new clamp on it and stopped thinking about it.

Yeah I certainly thought of that. Either way this issue will be addressed as I go through this rig and get it completely baselined.
