Toyota OEM hub conversion on M101

With help from the forum, I have started work on an M101 CDN. I replaced the hubs with 6x5.5 in order to use FJ Cruiser wheels (aluminum). Problem is, the studs are not the same thread as OEM Toyota so I can't use Toyota lug nuts. The lugs that came with the hubs are "acorn" type and barely hold the FJ Cruiser wheel on and do a lousy job centering as they are too small. The Toyota wheel uses a lug nut with a spacer that fills that large hole on the the wheel when it threads on.

Nowhere seems to make that style lug nut with the thread pitch of the hubs I got from Southwest Wheel. Where would I go about getting new studs (Toyota OEM thread style) to press in to the hubs.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I have to get this thing going for spring camping!

I dont know what the lugs look like on the FJ wheels but if it looks like a Mag style that the later FZJ80 wheels use I was able to get some in the right inch size and pitch from a local wheel shop They came with a lug with a shank and a washer .
Its what I used on my trailer and works well , I tried to get a set of new studs but I couldnt find anything that fit the holes in the drum

The only mag style lug nuts I could find were for Firebirds and such and were too large for the opening in the Toyota wheel. Where did you get yours?

Heres a web site that has specs on lugs , I'm looking to see if I can find what I got ,
Mag Lug Nuts

Look at the 1st 2 one is for 1/2 inch studs and the other is for 7/16th They are the middle sized in depth and I'm 90% sure they were the size I used

Thanks for looking. I did see those, but they don't seem to be the same specs as the Toyota. I can't seem to find Toyota spec lugs except with a 1/2" stud rather than 12mm.

More or less, it needs to be a 13/16 Hex, ~1.5" long, .610" shank length, .730" shank width with a 1/2"-20 (Toyota is M12-1.5) thread pitch to fit the studs on the M101 hub. I might just see about new studs to match Toyota lugs. Just have to find one with the right knurled width to fit the hubs correctly.

This looked promising, but no luck:

Shoulder Length 11.50mm

The ones you have posted are fine as they dont show the spec with the washer that comes with it .
They will work fine as they are the same I'm using.

I don't mean to argue, I just dont see how a .680" shank diameter can work. Toyota uses a .730" shank. Without the correct shank size, you would need to use something like this:

I cannot, for the life of me, find a .730" shank in a 1/2"-20 thread. The only other option are new studs in the hub. I found some with a larger knurling than what comes on my hub. I would have to machine out the hubs to fit the studs though.

Found these to replace the 1/2"-20 studs on my hubs.

Zip Code Select | O'Reilly Auto Parts

They are M12-1.5 and will accept stock Toyota lug nuts.

They are tight, but fit it my 6 x 5.5" hubs from Southwest wheel. Now I can use my FJ Cruiser wheels on my trailer.

UPDATE

Its embarrassing how little I know about wheels and hubs. After getting hubs with the correct bolt pattern for my FJ Cruiser wheels I found out that the SAE studs on the hub used acorn nuts and the FJ wheels required OEM mag style lug nuts. The acorn nuts almost fit entirely in the hole in the wheel and there is no matching taper on the wheel to center it (not lug centric). Sooooo, I finally found wheel studs that were metric M12x1.5 and a cheap place to buy OEM Toyota lug nuts and got it all mounted up. All good, right? Nope. The Toyota wheel is hub centric and requires the correct hub to mate to centering the wheel. The lug nuts just keep the wheel on the hub. See this breakdown:

Hubcentric Adapter

So in the end I ended up buying Spidertrax wheel spacers. They have a lug centric mount to the hub but offer a hub centric mount to the wheel. This way the wheel will be centered and I don't have to worry about shearing a wheel stud on a long trip from a mis-centered wheel. In the end, I could have left the SAE studs on the new hub and just mounted the Spidertrax spacer to them. The spacer has M12x1.5 threads for the wheel and the correct hub size (106 mm). Fortunately the studs were only $1.69 each. Spidertrax however are $99.00 plus shipping for a pair.

Live and learn.

I'm guessing were both in the same boat. (but rowing hard hardstream)

The new axle is 5.5 on 6....but lug centric. The Spidertrax should bolt right on, making the the hubs now "hub centric", to fit the Trail Edition rims.

I'll post up once the new Dexter axle gets here...next Friday or so.

These uncharted waters are pretty scary...lololol

Can't wait to see the finish product.

Yup. I ended up ordering Spidertrax today. I couldn't find hub rings that would be the correct size to adapt from the trailer to the Toyota wheel. There was a place that would custom CNC them but they didn't get back to me. Good thing I didn't widen my fenders already. They are going to need to be 1.5 inches wider now.
