Help: how bad is this rust?

I don't think the 66 has AC, but reportedly they're fine on the Lexus. ;)

My birfs got rusted down to that level (but not that bad) and soon after filling them with the recommended grease they began cleaning up from use. Now six months later they're not perfect, but much much better.
I had no grease showing though.

I will tell you from experience....You may want to take a better look at the rust on the frame and joints. Toyota frames on specific vehicles are notorious for frame rust...I have lived on the east coast, Ohio (rust belt) and now in Colorado. When I first moved to Colorado I saw a 77 Subaru go down the road that looked like new! I couldn't believe how well it survived! Back on topic...I learned the hard way that once you start to see the paint/ undercoating flake off on any toyota truck you better pay attention. It's not about what you can see but rather what you can't see going on inside the frame. I have a 3rd gen 4runner in my garage right now that I just finished swapping out the rear in because the brackets for the trailing arms snapped off from rust. The underside of the 4runner does not look that much different than your pics. Of course there is MUCH worse out there but the questionable trucks need a second look.

Depends on what you want it for. Is it an investment, mud truck, daily driver, beater with a heater? If it's not going to be an heirloom I think you could do worse in the rust belt.

Mine lived in Cumbria (wettest part of the UK) most of it's life and the 'surface rust' is everywhere on the chassis but not structural. On the body the RHS rear wheel arch around and down to the sill (rocker panel) is rotten. If you pull out RHS inner panel in the load area you can see the metal that goes over the top of the rear wheel is started to rot away. As above, it is what you cannot see that is a problem.

Mine will go in the paint shop during summer for some welding.

regards

Dave

I was just looking at that one and this one. I'd take the 97 CE!

Toyota Land Cruiser 1997
The 97 ad is GONE! I didn't even get to look at it. Way to go advertising for him in my thread!

It's a daily driver, family vacation: Road trips of 4-14 hours with off road destinations and side trips. I tend to take the road less traveled and generally I found areas that challenged my unlocked 95, and areas I wanted to go but didn't because I didn't think I could get out again. I don't wheel it every weekend, but if I had something more capable I would more often.

So, it has to have a decent interior, I'd prefer lockers (who wouldn't?), and not break down on me. My wife will be the primary driver, so a 2-3" lift, and it needs to look more like a family vehicle with an ARB and less like a buggy.

I've considered getting her something w/o lockers because she doesn't need them and getting me something a little more like that '94. I don't know, we're still figuring it all out, and part of that has to do with what's available.

Sorry bro. It went quick! Holy crap! An hour and a half and it was gone!

There are lots of them out there...

Meh, I was kidding, but this is my point. I think a decent cruiser at a decent price is going to be snatched up like that.

I know. I just pulled the trigger on another one. Not the 97 CE I posted.

undercarriage rust looks fine to me :shrugs:

Look out for touch up paint, especially around the windshield or windows. That is usually hiding a rust bomb underneath. Frame/undercarriage just is nothing in terms of expense compared to body rust.

If you really are considering it, pay a mechanic to throw it on a lift and get someone you trust to thoroughly look it over with you. It's definitely worth a $25.00 - $50.00 investment to look it over for 30-45 mins. Those photos are pretty soft focus, so it's really hard to tell if there's any concerning rust spots.

Ha! We don't have rust like that around here. What am I looking for with whack-a-mole? Just see what falls off?

Pass. Let the rusty ones go die a slow death in the NE. Not worth a compromised ownership experience when there are clean ones in the South, South West and PNW. Virginia has mild climate but they do salt from time to time - thats when the truck stays parked. Bought it from AZ w/ a shiny stock under carriage and want to keep it that way.

Doesn't the UT hwy dept use salt on hwy there?
During a snow storm between Dinosaur, CO and Vernal, UT, the hwy in CO is usually snow covered till you hit the UT boarder, then its dry roads from the salt. Its been a few years sense I have drove there in a winter storm, I assume they still use salt on roads?

Salt = Rust doesn't it?
