Curiously, I had the radiator and coolant hoses replaced by "new to me" shop, 3 days ago......
There’s the problem. 10/10 chance it’s a transmission cooler hose, either at the bottom of radiator or at the external cooler, that they installed incorrectly...
 
Good news is these transmissions (with exception of a small batch in 2000 apparently) are stupid tough.

If you ran out of fluid your torque converter just isn't locking up. You stopped driving it and did the right thing. Fix the leak, fill her up, and get back to business.

It appears that it was a cooler hose that was nicked and cut by the fan. Probable operator error when the radiator, etc. was replaced a week ago....
Replaced the hose, refilled with tranny fluid and appears good to go....
