hey all,
While trying to remove the spare from our 100 I noticed that the bolt that I am to connect to in the bumper has sheared off. Or at least, I believe it has.

Take a look at the (crappy) screen capture. It shows the cone housing and the bolt that's supposed to be there - but it isnt. I can see some of the sides that were once there, but the 'key' doesnt fit inside and I believe it to be the bottom of the bolt that was there once upon a time.

How do I get my spare down? There are 4 12/14mm bolts on top of the assembly that I can feel but unsure if it'll remove the spare mount assembly.

Any help or guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

It looks like your keyway is there, but just rusted/stripped. Mine was stripped out and I could not get it to grip. I ended up unbolting the whole crossmember.

I didn't think you actually used the bolt to crank on but rather the curved end of the rod fits into the cone and that turns it.
Edit: Looked at some pictures and i guess it is rusted away...ouch.

You might be able to rotate the spare until the cable snaps - that's how mine was stolen last year.

Can you share how you unbolted the entire cross member? I'm thinking I'll remove the rear bumper this weekend and have a go at it.

IIRC there are two bolts on each side that mount the spare crossmemeber to the frame. Not sure how difficult they are to remove with the spare in place, but I removed mine in about 15 mins without the spare down there.

You are looking at a rusted out anti-theft key. IF you don't have the special socket/attachment that goes on your spare tire let down tool, then you'll need to remove the four bolts on the winch itself. You can reach them with a ratcheting wrench by reaching up over the tire. You can support the tire (if you like) with a strap so it doesn't come down on you when you take out the last bolt.

You can also remove the entire cross member, but you are still going to have remove the winch (twice the work) in order to get that silly keyed part off the winch which will allow normal use of the hook on the letdown tool to access your spare in the future.

I just jacked my rear end up on the old 2005 100 series and took the winch off from the top.

It can be done with some contortions.

You can take the entire cross member off as well.

Thanks guys. I think the silver piece I have is the key, but it doesnt seem to fit. I'll take a photo and post it later. If I am indeed missing the key, I'll take her over to Toyota and have them order a new one. I'm really hoping this is the case!

What's also worrisome to me is that the spare tire is probably from 2001. I inherited the truck from my dad who passed last year and from the looks of the back of the tire, it looks brand new - with the exception of severe dry rot.

It won't work even with a new key, too rusty. There is a plastic cover (black) on the inside of the cone that has to be removed so you can rock the anti-theft bolt out of the unit (it is just pressed in place), then you can just use the hook on the let down tool (per normal) to use the winch.

OR....buy a new winch...if you want the anti-theft feature, but its just going to do it again.
