TL; DR: Is the antenna mast supposed to come out from the top or from the bottom? Old broken one stuck in antenna housing tube and I can't manage to completely get it out.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on here. A few months ago I got a beautiful 1990 FJ62 that I'm really excited about. Have been enjoying it while fixing things here and there. Among other things it came with a broken antenna. I noticed that the antenna motor appears to be working, as it makes a noise when I press up and down on the switch. After some pretty extensive research on this site about automatic antennae and potential problems, I got a replacement antenna mast from Specter. I removed the antenna motor and disassembled it to discover a broken cable. My biggest problem is that the short bit of broken antenna that is inside the antenna housing tube refuses to come out. I've stuck a long screwdriver in there from the bottom and pushed up a few times, and part of it very stubbornly started to come up. But after a couple of inches it stopped and it's been impossible to get the rest of it out no matter how hard I pull. Looking in there with a flashlight I notice there seems to be three or four tabs which seem to be part of the internal mechanism of the tube (am I interpreting that correctly or is that part of the old antenna that needs to come out?), I don't know if I may have caused damage to those by getting the screwdriver in there, or I maybe the old antenna is supposed to come out from the bottom and I'm mistakenly forcing it to come up the wrong end? Am I going in the right direction and just need to keep trying?

Any help and guidance is appreciated. Feels like I'm so close to being able to start installing the new mast and I've found myself with the whole antenna motor out of the car and in pieces, and I can't move forward.

Attaching a pic of the stubborn antenna (or what's left of it) and a shot of my rig.

Thank you for the response. I've seen diving deep into antenna threads but I'm having a hard time finding the very basic answer to whether the antenna should be removed from the bottom or from the top. If anyone out there can simply tell me that I would at least know if I'm attacking the problem correctly. Cheers!
