I recently bought a PZJ70 (1990). Since this vehicle had a major accident in the past I'm planning to replace its body with that of a BJ70. Are the bodies of the two vehicles identical? Is the engine bay of the PZJ70 longer? Is the firewall different? Are there any modifications I'll have to make if I replace the body?

Secondly, what modications will I have to make to fit a 1HZ engine and transmission to my PZJ70?

Thanks

All models that end in the same number of a similar year are the same. The only difference being where the engines are from a different family and have engine mounts in different positions
The 1HZ should drop into the 1PZ mounts.
The 1PZ has an extension on the radiator fan to waterpump shaft to reach the radiator,so removing that should do it.
It may also have the radiator moved slightly back ,but it will be easy to rectify by removing any spacers(if there are any).

Which gearbox are you using?
All the 5 sp sit in the same place and use the same crossmember. You may need to check if your old crossmember on the 4 sp is the same as a 5sp

I swapped a 1HZ into my FJ73 and the fit is perfect even though the FJ73 was built 2 years before the 1HZ was released.
The 73 like all heavy duty 7* series has the same engine bay.
If you need any more pics ,PM me your email and I can send them full size.

John:

I've briefly compared my HZJ73 with Wayne's PZJ70 - and the 1PZ is a couple of inches further away from the firewall than the 1HZ. To fit a 1HZ, I understand that you need to use the 1HZ bell-housing and input shaft to the transmission. Rosco's pictures should give you a good idea how close the engine is to the firewall, compared to your 1PZ.

Hope that helps,

Jim

This is really old topic, but I'm planning to put a 1HD-T in my PZJ75 and I need some help...

Engine mounts are in PZJ75 and HZJ75 same so that is no problem, but left side engine brackets which are welded in frame have for some reason different part numbers. Do you know why is that and what is the difference? Right side brackets are same in both. Also I need information, if the engine brackets are welded in PZJ75 and HZJ75 in same position or in different position? How much there is free space between cylinder head and fire wall in HZJ75? In internet pictures the free space is really small, so next questions is, is it easy to install the gearbox in HZJ75 if the cylinder head almost already hits the firewall?

Thanks a lot!!!

There have been a couple of us who have done the swap from 1PZ the 1HD, but the change content really depends on what you are doing for the transmission. In my case from a PZJ77 I kept the R151 transmission location which then pushes the engine further forward. If you are swapping the transmission as well I still believe that you have to replace/make one of the engine mounts, but you will also need a new cross member.

Thanks! I have H151 from 1995 HDJ80 but with HF2A+PTO so it should fit 1HD-T from 1992 HDJ80 well. Flywheel is the bigger one. The cross member will be self made when I see where the position will be. My car is 24V so had to modify the engine to 24V. Center diff lock actuator is 12V and I use the 12V transmission relay from HDJ80. So both of them are operated through voltage regulator.

Don't know if there will be problems like gearstick inside the dash or similar, but my biggest concern is the engine location. I wouldn't like to change brackets if not needed. Did you use your old engine brackets, or did you remove the old ones and installed new self made ones or ones from HZJ?

Thanks! Now it's clear. I use the front hole on right side bracket and move the left side bracket bit forward.

reviving an old thread, but you wouldn't happen to know what the correct part number for the 1hx bell housing and input shaft are? I am having the same issue with the extra 2" from the firewall with my swap.

Thanks,
