Allright, glorified belt tensioner it is.

I couldn't find a straight answer...
Why, with it gutted and hooked back up exactly the way it was (hoses, etc...), does it run fine and have (hopefully) no ill effects? I assume it is at the sake of emissions, but is there anything else I am missing? Just curious.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

The smog pump is supposed to push more air into your catalytic converter to help burn pollutants. It would also seem to dilute the percentage of pollutants at the tail pipe which is important since the US only measures emissions by percentages at tailpipe.

When the blades explode inside the pump, locking it up, it is common for the rotor to bend.
Do not be surprised if after reassembling sans vanes, it still will not turn, or will only turn freely for a partial revolution.

Possible fixes include: grinding or hammering on the high side of the rotor, or replacing the pump assembly.

I give up

Well, I'm just going to spend the weekend and redo the belts, the power steering (mine was leaking, probably caused the sieze just like everyone else's) and the smog pump/air pump.

Thanks for all the advice.

Any other ideas/stuff I should consisder while I'm in there with the power steering and the air pump out?

New smog pump, new power steering, new belts. Okay. Well, that sucked. 14 hours which includes trips back and forth for crap I didn't have, but overall, that sucked. I better never have to do it again. The infamous back bolt to the power steering was no joke. So were the bolts that mounted the ps bracket to the engine. I can't decide which was worse. Then I cut the bolt and cut it too short, so I ended up getting one with the original lenght, bolting the ps to the bracket, then the bracket where it is supposed to go. Needless to say, that all sucked. Then when I was finally finishing up the hoses and misc stuff, I realized I screwed up the inlet/outlet hoses of the air pump. So I had to reach my huge hands down there, unscrew the worm clamps and switch them.

Finally done. All is well until tomorrow when something else breaks. Thanks for all the advice and help.
