Same engine with some electronics on the fuel pump for some more HP.The pump can not be repaired except by Toyota Im told, about $2500 + fitting in oz
Not much to repair on a diesel once its running right.
They only need regular oil and filter changes for up to 100000klms,which is why many of us own them.

Thought about a BJ71 or 74? I dont think the weight difference would be that much,if any.

Interesting.

I have not come across a bj71 or 74 for sale here.

The 1kz-te seems solid enough from what I've read. What about all the concerns about driving in mountains? It seems kind of odd to me that these vehicles cant handle inclines on the highway. Can somebody explain this to me?

If I do buy this thing I do plan on doing a lot of highway driving! and in all sorts of conditions.

You need to get the list of canadian importers but try Wayne at Luxury Imports 1st(I think he is away at the moment)
Diesels tend to get hot if you try to charge up a hill in top gear with low rpms.
This probably helped kill a few of the 2LT,but many died mainly because of the inadequate coolant flow in the head. The engine was never designed for a turbo in the 1st place and the australian non turbo models last 400000klms reguarly
The 1KZTE will handle the hills but on really steep ones you need to drop back a gear and keep the rpms at 2000+ so you have lots of airflow through the combustion chamber in relation to the amount of fuel being dumped in.
Just like the big rigs;)

Sounds about right. I've got a ton of experience with driving Hino trucks, just never a passenger size diesel!
Thanks

I took it for a test drive today. I kind of love it!

It rides great, revs about the same as my 3.3 chrysler v6! Had it up to 120km/hr on the highway. Put it in 4 low and went around a gravel lot. Played with the hub lock and the 4 hi. Seems to engage properly.

There is a wheel balance issue and it will need new tires to pass a safety but other than that everything is fine.

Hi,

I its a KZJ78, its a 3.0 turbo, really a nice engine.
I got one of my own and won't sell for the world, just don't push it over 110 mph for 100 miles, it'll break.
The price is on th hi side, depends on the mileage.. I wouls buy it for 8000 max

So would I be safe to say I've gathered the following from this thread:

This is a model LJ78
It has an 1KZ T or FTE engine
It would make a great family wheeler

Am I wrong here?

 Then I googled LJ78 and found this

Luxury Imports - LJ71 / LJ78 Prado WARNING!!

Doesn't look good! I wanted to buy this for a cross canada road trip, but this is not looking good!

id buy it now i just changed my 3L powered BLUE LJ77 to a 1KZ-TE with AUTO for the future wife to drive around and to take my kayaks and fishing kit and YES to go to the jungle. Pictures of transormation coming the truck is still in the GYM building its muscles. Engine is in and gearbox and exhaust changed now its getting a much needed coat of paint. Lift kitt and new coils and bumper and rear bumprt and winch to go.

my advice is Buy it

I cant think of a place i'd even approach 110mph here. In fact I dont think I'd ever get upto that speed in an LC.

In fact at this speed whats it reving at? Right below the red line?

anyone know the rebuild miles on the engine (1KD-TE's for normal usage) I suspect its almost at rebuild time 280,000K is lot I was advised the engine rebuild time will start at somewhere around 300,000k for a 1KZ but that does depend on the engines life.
