Howdy,

Don't quite know where to begin so I will just jump into it. My name is Karl I have been a Toyota fan for quite a long time. Last Toyota I owned was an 87 4runner turbo. Traded it in awhile back on a Nissan pickup (don't hate me). Haven't done a whole lot of off road on 4 wheels but did a bit on 2. I did some long range moto trips on my BMW Dakar and loved it. My family has grown and I would like to include them in my adventures. Sold the bike and am looking at getting into either a LC or a 4runner for expedition style off road travel. I was hoping to come to a meeting and meet some folks and talk trucks, so I was wondering if there was going to be a Rudy's meeting on the 31st. Thanks. in advance and I look forward to meeting everyone.

-Karl

A friend of mine is selling her 2000 4runner. Its got a ton of miles, over 200k but would be a great trail rig for cheap. I'll post pics soon

Originally I was thinking of doing more expo style travel, So I am looking at selling my Frontier and trying to get into a 3rd or 4th gen with under 100k, around 60k or 70k if I can find it because it will probably be my DD as well. I am open to all suggestions and ideas though, if the price is right. :) See y'all tonight.

Welcome Karl. Hope to see you at the meeting tonight.

Narrowing down the search.. Did some test driving this weekend..Must say not a big fan of the way the 4th gen 4runner feels...It is odd like a car on stilts. So now I am leaning on 3rd gen or 1st gen Taco Double cab. Driven both, like them both and I have a line on a few. Possibly by next meeting I will be a bona fied owner once again and can join up. Any opinions on either of these rigs? Anyone running a taco in the club?

-Karl

I don't own a Taco, but I'ved owned a semi built 3rd gen 4runner and currently have a 4th gen 4runner, V8 4wd as my DD. I honestly like the way it handles being that it is AWD and the V8 is a lot of power for that size rig. If you could find an 80 with low miles, that would be the way to go for what it sounds like what you want to accomplish. Otherwise, a double cab Taco with a camper shell on the back would work pretty well.

I would LOVE an 80 but finding one with low enough miles to where I would be comfortable using it as my DD has been a bit difficult. Def been looking too, Autotrader, ebay, craigslist. Ideally I would like it to be below 130k even better if it was below 100. Unoman, please take no disrespect on my 4th gen comment. I think they are great looking and from what I have seen on a few sites, great off road. I think I am just prefer more of the old school truck feel over the newer more refined style of the 4th gen, again just my preference.

-Karl

Oh, no offense taken. I completely understand the "old truck" look. For me, the 40 scratches that itch

Awesome! Thanks for the search site. So lemme ask this....do you think my mileage expectations of around 130k or under to use as a daily driver are realistic? Or am I being overly conservative. I mean I know these things were built like a tank for the most part.

-Karl

I think it's realistic. You just have to work hard at searching and be able to jump on a good deal. Also, don't be afraid to ask other cruiserheads to look it over for you if it's out of town.

Also, prices on early 100 series LC's (1998-2000) with the miles you're looking for are getting close to the price of a low miles 80. 100's are great daily driving machines while still being good off-road vehicles.

Seems the 80s with 100K or less are priced pretty high and really hard to find.
I searched for one with less than 150K for a long time, and settled for one with 200K!
I agree with Dave that you might consider a 100 if you are looking for lower miles. It probably would make your search easier.
