Hi to all you FJ owners,
I have just recently signed up on this forum, and have really enjoyed looking through all the threads, there is a myriad of information here.
I have been on the lookout for a FJ40 for a while and finally purchased a FJ 40 about 9 months ago from a farm in Wangarei, its a 1984 with the 2F...have been considering how far I am going with the FJ, the 2F motor is in a sad condition with the worst compression being 90PSI on the rear cylinder, and there is a bit of rust, although not too bad. The previous owner fitted Rockcrawler springs front and back - which seems very very stiff - may need to take out some spring leaves.

Ideally I would like to put in a big diesel...or do I keep it standard? - The 2F's are not an economical motor.... decisions to be made. Currently it is coming apart and I will start from the ground up and restore the vehicle to something spectacular (without being over the top). Got to have power steering!

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Corey - have asked the moderator to move it for me

Welcome to Mud! Looks like you have a good 40 to start your madness with. I'm not sure what diesel motors are available over there in NZ, but check out the diesel swaps in the diesel and 24 volt part of the forum. I'm very much interested in diesels myself, but the Toyota motors are very expensive here in the USA, so I'm picking up parts to put a GM 6.2 or 6.5 in.

Nice 40!
Welcome to MUD!!
We need more pics of your rig!
Glad you left the FJ section this is where you belong in the 40 section!

Nice rig ! Welcome !

Thanks guys, the FJ is relatively sound, has rust in the usual places ie doors and the rear tray, the side panels are pretty much gone, but I picked up some fiberglass ones recently (would have preferred steel).
Still investigating which motor to fit, the range of available motors in New Zealand is limited compared to the US- would love a 6.2 or a 6.5 but obviously come at a premium price and freight to NZ, taxes, etc. Hopefully I will win the lottery soon!
My daily car is a Nissan Patrol with the TD42 motor - great motor, indestructible and a few FJs here in NZ have them fitted, but I need to do some investigation to see how it will all fit in, bell housing, etc...in the meantime the FJ will be stripped down and all rust removed, chassis zinc sprayed, and everything cleaned up and inspected - will be as good as new in the end (could be a while)
Will post more pics as I go along
Dave

Welcome Dave! Nice 40! Looking forward to your build thread!!

Watch for Tom @lostmarbles - he's one of your fellow countrymen and, if you catch him early, he's generally in a good mood ;) and he's extremely knowledgeable, especially when it comes to 40 diesels and any systems shared between petrol and diesel 40s. He's really a great guy, but don't tell him I said so...

Welcome to the madness Dave also have MartynFJ4071 another who is down in the land of the long white cloud.

I was just about to mention that Martyn had chimed in recently. Think he's from your area as well. We're doing a build down Taupo way on an 84.

There are some 3B motors on Tardme but an HD-T would be much cooler.

Gidday Dave! Welcome!

There are a few kiwis coming out of the woodwork recently. I am in Auckland and like you are aspiring too: I am dropping a diesel Toyota 15B-F into mine. In the process of having the block tapped for water and oil lines for the turbo currently. I went this route as the 6 cylinder engines generally have high kms and still command high $$. The 15B-f can be found in Dyna trucks.

Where abouts are you? In Auckland Active 4x4 is a good source of Dynas and later model cruiser parts. Forget Vernon and Vazey - they are rip off merchants.

Picked up my 15b from Active with a genuine 31,000km on it for $5.1k

Also in the middle of a slowly progressing frame off!

PS: call the truck a 40 instead of FJ (refers to the rotten FJ Cruiser) to save getting slagged off here!

I have seen the 3B on Trademe, problem being it doesn't fit the 2F bell housing (as far as I know), yes the 4.2 HD would be a very nice transplant and they go like the clappers...but expensive, its almost better to buy an older 80 series Landcruiser and pull the engine and transmission out of it, then you are guaranteed to get all the bits required for the transplant...then scrap or sell the rest, also assuming the motor is in good condition, usually they have high kms which is OK if they have been looked after.
Which motor are you putting into your build?
Cheers

I'm in Belmont on the shore, will look up Active 4x4 and see what they have. A motor with 31k on it sounds good - will last a while. Did think of getting a clapped out motor and having it reconditioned...buts its finding one which may be tricky, although I still need to decide which motor to fit
Good luck with your build!!

Over here on the other side of the ditch there's a few with the 1HZ but most either swap to 350 chev or keep the 4 cyl diesel route and do 13BT, 14BT and 15BT as they are a good engine. Most lately are 13Bt's as they are readily available in buses and light trucks.
Also, a 3B loves a turbo on it and I follow a few around here and they are no slouch when it comes to getting up and over stuff.
Good luck with your project. I'm doing a 4 door version with a 1VD-FTV for a change.

No the 2f bell housing won't fit.

So the engine I have is also a "b" series engine like the 3b, however much more modern, more powerful and more torque. It is also more compact so fits the 40 engine bay as it is supposed too.

The short wheel base limits your transmission options, with the h55f being the ultimate as it has a 5 speed. You find these on a 60 or 70 series with a 3b or 13bt engines. Your h42 transfer will bolt right up to the h55f.

B series H55f and the associated alloy bell housing bolt up to 3b, 4b, 11b, 13bt, 14b and 15b. All of which you can get in NZ.

Then there is the H series h55f - also found in 60 and 70 series which I believe bolts up too the H (2h and 12ht), PZ (1PZ), HZ (1HZ) and HD (1HD and variants) engines.

Putting in a 15b- f which is 4.1L and turboing it!

We should hook up and talk cruisers!

yep. But still a way to go yet. CHassis off for extension tomorrow. Then put the bodies on it and weld the 2 together.

Definitely would love to have a look at your 40, the great thing about this forum is that already I am earning about what will fit and what wont.
A 5 speed gearbox would be nice, but not critical at this point, and maybe do it at a later date when I can find one. The existing 2F is not in good nick a all, and I don't see it as adding value by spending money on it...
