Hello all. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a long time follower first time poster. I'm from SoCal, Ontario area. I have been an 80 series fan for several years and recently picked up a clean stock 1997 Collector's Edition, unlocked  (I know I know). The previous owner was meticulous about upkeep so she is a gem. They kept her so stock she doesn't even have tinted windows. I do have a build planned and parts have already been ordered.

Welcome to Mud.....

Welcome to MUD.

Don't feel bad for getting an unlocked one. You probably saved a lot of money.... With which you can simply install aftermarket lockers and still come out on top. ;)

Welcome to MUD !! Great purchase, locked or not. If you ever build your truck and re-gear, you can add Harrop/Eaton eLockers. Look into them, you'll be happy you did.

ok good to know. Dumb question.... is it possible to aftermarket “Triple lock” them?

Sincerely,

Noob
Yes.

You already have a center diff lock. It's part of the low range or you can add a switch and do a Pin 7 mod.

The F/R diffs you can add a Harrop E-Locker, a "lunchbox" rear locker, or ARB lockers, as well as other choices.

It's only money.

Welcome.. not everyone uses lockers. Nice to have though. I wouldn't feel bad about it but it is your rig and you build it how you want regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Welcome :flipoff2:

what’s your build plans?

Keep her stock. Spend the money on a turbo and engine management. Stock 400HP FZJ80 would drive like a dream.

After I win poweball, LS swap lol. Even in Cali it takes more than Joe Rogan money for the LS swap in a 1997. One can dream.

I thought it just had to be same year or newer engine and keep OBDII functionality from the previous vehicle?

I have a friend doing a legal LS swap into a K5 blazer from a 2004 suburban, and the vehicle will then be smogged and treated as an 04 suburban. (It’s already confirmed with the BAR guy and his plan of action is approved. Didn’t cost any money, just a couple hours on the phone).

To non-Cali people, he can’t just “swap it in” and pass the sniffer with flying colors, as it would still fail visual inspection with having all the right vacuum lines hooked up to the carb, etc. They really do check all that stuff. (Which is incredibly stupid as I’m sure everyone, even the BAR referees, can agree)

edit: also, the swap will give him the ability to do CARB legal power adders to 550hp, which wasn’t very possible on the ‘79 350 engine. Not to mention he really wants fuel injection, and the only CARB legal aftermarket fuel injection kit has been discontinued for several years now. (One of the earlier versions of the Holley dominator kits I think. The current one is not legal)
