Hoping someone with an assembled axle can help me out - what is the maximum backspacing I can run with 17" diameter wheel and the Hellfire knuckle/arms setup? Trying to make a decision about a custom width front axle to match a rear axle, and one option is using a set of hellfire knuckles I have. Wheels would be similar in width/backspacing to TRD Rockwarriors, so about 6.5" back spacing. Will this work without spacers if I'm using the Hellfire knuckles?

Im planning on working on mine tomorrow, so I can put a Tundra wheel back on it and get you a pic/measurement. I have the Tundra wheels just for rollers, but they cleared with a 1" spacer. Spacers are off now, but never tried them after removal.

Muchas gracias mi amigo. Have you converted to 5 lug hubs and have the 5 lug 17" rock warriors for rollers? Or the 18" steel tundra spare wheels? My setup would use the 5 lug 105 hubs on the FJ80 spindle. I haven't purchased them yet, but assume they have the same WMS location as the 6 lug 80 hubs....

They are 2nd Gen, 6 lug, 17”. I’ll be home lil later tonight and can measure the BS, but wanna say they were like 5 1/2” or so. This pic is with the spacers still on.

Hard to take pics and hold a wheel, tape, and chunk of 2x4!!!! lol
Tried to get a pic as straight on as I could so you can see how fast realestate gets eaten with the steering also. I will be pulling the fronts off to keep "trimming" for the 40s tomorrow, so will put one of those back on and snap another pic from the front. New wheels are 3 3/4" BS

Just a thought that occurs to me looking at pictures... I assume the hell fire arms are not short enough to fit inside the rim if you were to really really backspace it? (Just in theory, not worrying about any other clearance issues.)

Mark...

Yep, I think you're probably right, and then add the rod ends or heims and I don't think they will work. Ill have it up on the rack tomorrow, and take some more pics.

If its not too much to ask - can you put a straight edge across the face of the wheel mounting surface and get a distance from the inside edge of the straight edge to the closest point of the steering arm?

Hard to tell in your pics, but is that 5” measurement from the inside face of the tire, or the inside face of the rim? You made comment of new wheel backspacing, kind of confused about exactly what im seeing in the photos.

On Mark’s point, i assumed the arm would not tuck inside of a 17” wheel. Maybe a 20” wheel? But the only way im running 20’s on anything is if they are wrapped in 42” BFG reds, and there are many reasons why those are not an option, but mostly related to $$$$$.

Many years ago when peter Straub was building Tippy and I was building the now aborted Tiny, the rule here at my shop was, No 20 inch rims unless they had 52 inch Michelin XMLs wrapped around them.

I guess it still is actually. 😉

I forget my back spacing but here

Here’s a couple pics. One thing I realized when I took it back off, is that a Tundra wheel doesn’t clear the hub and sit on the flange. Never knew that before because of the spacers, and measuring the scuff on the hub, it was exactly 1/4”. When I measured them, that was a 2x4 chunk from wheel lip to wheel lip, measuring from the flange of the wheel out. I’m gonna say that there’s now way a 6 1/2 BS wheel will fit.

Thanks for your time in this.

Circling back to answer my own question after re-visiting it again....right from the Ruffstuff website, maximum wheel backspacing is 4.5" ( I assume this is for 17" wheels).
