Hey All,

I am looking for a little guidance in beefing up my rear suspension. I have added a lot of weight and it bottoms out over a grocery store parking lot speed bumps.

Does anyone here have experience with air bags on a 78 series? I am considering the type that sit inside the spring coils and since I have an ARB compressor already I figured I'd put it to use.

Thoughts?

I do a heap of towing and pretty much was on bumpstops all the time, was advised against airbags not really being up to the task, I cut the bump stops in half and found some 2" lift springs for free from an 80 series, cut them to height(ha ha nothing like cut springs)
and shoved them back in, I run standard height and the standard electronic switch shocks, the heavier spring rate worked a treat and only rides a little harder than factory, the switch between hard and soft actually makes a lot of difference to the rear end especially when set hard , great for towing, I think it must slow down the rebound?

I ran air bags inside the coils but are not up to making any difference when expecting them to support so much extra weight. ( towing caravan with 120Kg on ball ) KZJ71

I upgraded to medium OME rear springs with an ~2" lift and they are great. I load 1000lb into my truck and tow a 3500lb camper trailer with a 300lb+ hitch weight. Truck sits a bit high in the back empty, and sits level loaded. Rides/tows comfortably.

This is the suspension I have in my truck:

- Front Spring to 50kgs (60mm lift) - 2 x Dobinson C59-244
- Front Nitrocharger shock - 2 x Old Man Emu N77
- Rear Spring Medium Load (40mm lift) - 2 x Old Man Emu OME873
- Rear Nitrocharger shock - 2 x Old Man Emu N79

Your idea of going with heavier springs did cross my mind but I might still risk going for the airbags that fit inside the springs. The bags are cheap and the installation is easy and I am hoping to be able to adjust the stiffness between loads. If it doesn't work I haven't really changed that much and I could just scrap them. In fact I've ordered the bags and installing in 2 weeks. I went from knowing nothing at the beginning of my thread to thinking I know it all.

I am going with the advice of the commission earning salesperson, they would never lie to me.

But thank you
