I know there was a thread on this earlier, but I can't find it to save my life. The blower motor in my cruiser has completley gone out. It doesn't work at any of the settings now, so I really need to fix it. It used to work on the two highest and not the lowest settings. What should I check first? Take it out and lube it? What if its the resistor pack, is that a pain to fix? Sorry again for repeating a thread, but I can't find the old one.

Pull the motor and then pull the silver cap and see what kind of condition your brushes are in.

Mine went out awhile back and my brushes had worn grooves into the armature so I couldn't replace the brushes. Had to buy a new motor.

If it only worked on the two highest settings it may be something in your switch.
Check and make sure that you are getting power to the motor.

It won't be the resistor pack if it doesn't work on high speed. I had the same issues as "Civil 1", my armature was hoped as well. A new motor was about $100 last year through Toyota.
If you want all speeds you'll need the restistor pack as well. That's an easy changeout as is the motor.

Ok thanks for the tips guys, I'll be ordering one up tomorrow morning.

The 'guts' (armature/brushes/brush plate) of the fan motor ( for the under dash heater/AC) is same as under seat rear heater and carb cooling fan.

Good info soggy, wished I would have thought of that when mine when out.

reviving an old thread, sorry.

so my fan crapped out on me yesterday and i'm heading out on a 650 mile road trip today so i needed heat bad. it's 8 degrees outside right now. i called around and can't get brushes anywhere. i can get motors, which i'm not even sure if those come with the brushes (which is what i need) so i helf off for now. after searching here on blower motors last night i decided to tear in to my carb cooling fan since i'm quite sure i wont miss it. it's different then the heater fan. smaller motor, smaller brushes, smaller diameter hole on the circuit wafer board thing that the brush guides are attached to. it's absolutely rediculous the amount of hackery i did but i got it to work in a couple hours. i had to take the brush guides off the board out of the carb cooling fan and put them on the board of the heater fan. 2 out of 4 holes lined up for each (each guide has 4 pins that go through the board and bend up to secure themselves). so i used a little epoxy too. cut off the round plug on the end of the wires and spliced in the square interior fan plug. surprisingly enough it works great. for now. all it has to do is last me a few days. it's extremely ghetto but for people searching on this, just fyi the brushes are not really directly interchangeable. if you stuck the carb cooling fan brushes directly in to the heater fan brush guides, there's to much slop and eventually they're just gonna fly out. to much slop. can't speak for the under seat heater, those might work.

where are people getting just the brushes? i called every place in town and it wasn't shown as an optioin anywhere.

and when you guys buy new motors from napa/dealership/where ever is that including the brushes with it?

brushes, This comes up with all sorts of series wound motors. power tools, vacum cleaners, etc. You can find brushes at motor rewind shops, appliance repair/ parts shops. not auto shops. They are usually a piece of carbon or occassionally copper bar. So you can always cut down a bigger set if the right size is not available. They do need to be seated to the armature. a gritty cleaner or non conductive rubbing compoud works for this. then clean well. And you are done. Slight grooves in the armature can be cleaned up by spinning up the armature with a drill motor in a vise and sanding the armature. Motor shops do this on a lathe. You might need to relieve the seperators on the armature if they are not slightly below grade.

Did you try resetting the breaker? The blower motor has a circut breaker. Under dash on drivers side. It looks like a roundish circular thing with a silver bottom. In the silver bottom about the size of a quarter is a tiny hole. Push a papper clip in there and it will reset.

for now, wack on the bottom of the blower motor....it might come bqck to life for a bit.

Probably a dumb question, but where is the blower motor? Mine does nothing!

Well I had the same deal it worked on med and high and then it got to the point of would not work unless you bumped it. Then went out all together. I pulled the bottom of the motor off and the brushes and other gunk fell out. I then pulled out the rest of the brushes and I took the brushes out of an old vacum cleaner. I solder them back in and put it back together. Bada Bing Bada Boom it works great about a month ago going good.

Inside, bottom right corner of the dash, two wire plug above the right of the passenger's feet (assuming it's left hand drive)

For what it's worth, my brushes were worn real bad, but I just cleaned everything up and it works like new. Had I known about the rear heater brushes, I would have swapped them since I never use the rear heat. Based upon how worn my brushes were, I'm sure I'll eventually be opening it up again, but I'll just swap the brushes then.
