So, just an update. I think I've traced the issue to the stop light circuit, as removing that fuse causes the problem to go away. I've pulled all the break light bulbs one at a time, and that has made no difference though. any ideas where to look next? Also, I had the breaks done the week before this issue began: front pads, back pads and rotors. I don't see why they would have touched anything electrical while doing the breaks, but it does seem like a bit of a coincidence.

Have you had any trailer wiring done recently?

No, but there is trailer wiring that I've never used. How would I test that? If I disconnect the box that's behind the rear driver's side panel, does that effectively remove the circuit? I was a little nervous, because that box says something about high power, or high capacity or something a bit frightening sounding. Electrical is not my friend.

Just a guess if someone had made any changes in the wiring. The conversion box is known for going bad but would only cause the trailer lights to not work.

I doubt that the box would be causing the problem since no aftermarket wiring has been done. Something else going on.

Update: We had a big thaw today, with the weather getting above freezing for the first time since this issue crept up. Mysteriously, the problem seams to have solved itself, for now at least. I'm thinking there must have been some ice shorting out a connection somewhere, probably somewhere along the trailer hookup wiring. Not sure if that makes sense though.
